New Mexico is making remarkable strides toward cleaner energy, notably outpacing industry trends with its utility company, the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM). By successfully transitioning to sustainable alternatives, this utility now provides a significant portion of its electricity from renewable sources.

Transforming the Energy Landscape

In 2025, PNM reported an impressive 80% of its electricity was carbon-free, thanks to significant investments in solar power, wind energy, and battery storage technologies. During the day, solar energy powers various systems like air conditioners and fans, while stored energy keeps homes lit in the evening. This shift toward clean energy has occurred within just five years, transforming a system that relied heavily on coal and natural gas through 2021.

Laurie Williams, PNM’s Senior Vice President, emphasizes that this change is not merely about compliance with regulations but is driven by a fundamental cultural shift within the organization. Over her 34 years with PNM, Williams has noticed an increasing awareness of the detrimental impact of fossil fuels on the climate. “We’ve got to be part of solving the problem,” she remarked, highlighting a collective resolve to move towards a more sustainable future.

Legislative Support for Renewable Energy

Much of PNM’s progress can be attributed to the Energy Transition Act, which was enacted in 2019. This law lays out ambitious renewable energy mandates for the state, stipulating a requirement of 50% renewable energy by 2030, 80% by 2040, and 100% zero-carbon electricity by 2045. Notably, PNM is on track to meet the zero-carbon goal five years ahead of schedule, indicating that utilities can indeed lead the charge for renewable energy.

The Energy Transition Act also allocates funds to assist workers displaced by the closure of coal plants, with an emphasis on developing new renewable energy projects in affected communities. Despite initial delays, approximately 2,800 workers have been retrained, exceeding the original target, showcasing the positive impact of this groundbreaking legislation.

Community Engagement and Solar Expansion

Small-scale solar installations are becoming increasingly popular in New Mexico. Reports indicate that the number of residential solar systems more than doubled from 2020 to 2025. Not everyone can or wants to invest in solar panels for their homes, so community solar projects have emerged, allowing residents to buy shares in larger solar farms. Currently, there are 16 existing community solar projects, with plans for many more, collectively generating a significant amount of renewable energy.

Additionally, this transition to solar power is not just environmentally friendly; it’s also economically advantageous. While other areas in the U.S. have seen sharp increases in electricity costs, New Mexico’s average residential electricity rates have risen by only 7%, remaining below the national average.

Navigating the Future of Energy

Amid the benefits of renewable energy, interconnection remains a crucial challenge. As more renewable projects come online, connecting them to the electrical grid has become essential. New Mexico has developed policies aimed at streamlining this process, resulting in the state receiving an “A” grade for its interconnection policies from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council.

The transition to a climate-friendly energy grid is complex and involves numerous engineering and logistical challenges. Williams aptly describes this transformation as a “math problem,” emphasizing the significance of policy and infrastructure in addressing these challenges.

Overall, New Mexico serves as a beacon of hope in the energy transition narrative, showcasing that proactive measures, community engagement, and legislative backing can lead to substantial advancements in renewable energy adoption. The future looks promising, not just for New Mexico but for regions worldwide seeking to shift to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
