SURJ Sports Investment, Live Nation, and Oak View Group (OVG) have come together to launch a groundbreaking joint venture named radia, aimed at enhancing sports and entertainment infrastructure across Saudi Arabia. This venture signifies an ambitious initiative to innovate the country’s landscape of stadiums, arenas, and other venues through effective management, marketing, and operational strategies.
Leadership and Vision of radia
Taking the helm as Chief Executive Officer of radia is Xavier Campbell, who brings extensive experience previously gained at Essendon Football Club and PwC’s sports and entertainment sector. As a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), SURJ Sports Investment is at the forefront, heavily focused on the nation’s sports assets. The PIF boasts approximately $900 billion in assets and is actively investing in the growth of its sports sector, which is projected to reach over $22 billion by 2030.
Danny Townsend, CEO of SURJ, emphasized that their mission is to revolutionize the live event experience while constructing significant infrastructure throughout the kingdom. “We’re undergoing an unprecedented sports and entertainment infrastructure development phase that no other nation has experienced,” he noted. Adding to this, Chris Granger, OVG’s CEO, stated that “Saudi Arabia is unmatched in its ambition to develop live entertainment infrastructure,” marking radia as a landmark opportunity in the global landscape.
Expanding the Sports Landscape in Saudi Arabia
SURJ has already played a pivotal role in attracting various sports events to Saudi Arabia, including Professional Fighters League (PFL), The Kings League, and the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament. Townsend explained that the Saudi Ministry of Sport has pinpointed 20 priority sports, which SURJ is keen to nurture, thus fostering a vibrant domestic sports economy.
This initiative is set to transform the sports calendar in Saudi Arabia, aiming to secure rights and licenses for major events that promote national interests. Previously, the country relied heavily on temporary arrangements for sporting events, but with radia, the objective is to establish a sustainable framework that empowers the Kingdom to own and manage these significant events long-term.

With Live Nation’s extensive experience in the region, the partnership promises to create top-notch live experiences and robust venue operations. John Reid, Chairman of Live Nation EMEA, expressed confidence that their expertise would lead to the development of venues that cater to the needs of artists, athletes, and audiences alike.
The collaboration comes at an opportune time, especially with the FIFA World Cup on the horizon in 2034. As Granger articulated, commercial sustainability will be a major focus, ensuring that the venues remain viable and successful long after the World Cup concludes. As Saudi Arabia undergoes a cultural transformation, the demand for live events and concerts is burgeoning, especially among its youthful population—80% of which is under 40. Townsend highlighted that this demographic is eager for music and entertainment, providing radia with an opportunity to satisfy the growing interest in live experiences.
Reflecting on past events, Townsend mentioned the impressive performance by Eminem at the Soundstorm music festival, which drew over 100,000 attendees.
