Saudi Arabia and Yemen Initiate Operation Yemeni Dawn to Reclaim Bab El-Mandeb from Houthi Forces

Yemen’s recent military initiatives highlight the ongoing conflict involving the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a crucial maritime passage for global trade. On October 5, Yemen’s government forces, with the backing of Saudi troops, commenced Operation Yemeni Dawn to regain control of the strait following its loss to Houthi militants in September. This strategic effort underscores the heightened importance of the Bab el-Mandeb, especially in light of rerouted oil export routes due to ongoing tensions in the region, particularly following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Significance of Bab el-Mandeb

The Bab el-Mandeb strait is not just a vital shipping lane; it has increasingly gained strategic value in recent months. With the closure of alternative routes, many oil exporters have turned to this passage, making its secure control essential for economic stability in the region. Control over Bab el-Mandeb allows for the free flow of trade and resources, and it directly impacts global oil prices and market stability. Hence, the conflict surrounding it has major repercussions beyond the borders of Yemen.

Operation Yemeni Dawn: Details and Objectives

On the morning of October 5, Colonel Majed al-Nuzaili, a spokesperson for the Yemeni military, announced the initiation of a major offensive targeting Houthi forces entrenched near the coastal town of Dhubab. Concurrently, Major General Turki al-Maliki reported that the Royal Saudi Air Force had launched aggressive aerial attacks involving over 100 warplanes aimed at more than 300 significant targets. This operation marks a significant escalation in Yemen’s conflict, as government forces have simultaneously mobilized for a counter-offensive aimed at seizing back the capital, Sanaa, which has been under Houthi control since 2014.

With the aid of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), the Saudi-supported Yemeni government forces aim to recapture territories lost in recent months. Reports indicate that the government claims to have regained control of the strategic port city of Mocha, showcasing the changing tide of power dynamics in the region.

Recent Developments in Southern Yemen

Earlier this year, the STC launched an ambitious operation against government forces in southern Yemen, pushing for the independence of South Arabia. This ambition resulted in the STC’s temporary success in asserting control over much of southern Yemen. However, following a government counter-offensive, STC forces were expelled from key areas. Despite the official dissolution of the STC as a political entity, its associated militias remain active, often better equipped than conventional government forces, and continue to collaborate with them on certain military operations.

These militias have played a critical role in recent battles, particularly in early September, when government forces faced a Houthi counterattack that forced a strategic retreat. The complex web of allegiances and the interplay of local militias highlight the evolving nature of the conflict and the difficulties faced by central authorities in maintaining control.

International Involvement and Support

While the United States has refrained from direct military involvement, reports indicate that over 200 U.S. intelligence personnel are assisting Saudi operations. The U.S. has been implicated in air support through midair refueling and defensive patrols aimed at bolstering Saudi capabilities. Meanwhile, both the UK and France have expressed their intent to support Saudi defensive operations, although the specifics of their involvement during this new offensive remain uncertain.

As Yemen’s situation continues to evolve, the international community closely monitors developments, recognizing the potential implications for regional stability, energy security, and broader geopolitical interests.
