Saudi Arabia denounces Houthi assaults on the nation, stating the faction opted for military escalation.

Saudi Arabia has expressed strong condemnation of recent Houthi attacks that have specifically targeted civilian facilities and sacred locations within the nation. This escalation occurs despite ongoing efforts from Riyadh to pursue a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Yemen.

Condemnation of Houthi Actions

In a formal statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry condemned the Houthis for their persistent assaults on civilian lives and key infrastructure, highlighting the “blatant and recurring attacks” on the revered cities of Mecca and Medina. The ministry pointed out various attacks on Riyadh, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, Najran, Taif, and Yanbu, along with assaults on maritime vessels in the southern Red Sea and the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Saudi officials have claimed that the Houthis have launched missiles and drones towards Mecca and Medina, allegations the Yemeni group has rejected. Furthermore, attacks on energy facilities across the kingdom have led to civilian casualties and significant property damage, raising serious concerns about public safety.

Right to Defend Sovereignty

The Saudi government emphasizes its “inherent right” to defend its territory and resources, underscoring the need to protect both its citizens and residents. The ministry indicated that it would take all necessary actions to ensure national security, maintaining compliance with international law. This stance comes as Saudi Arabia reiterates its commitment to assist Yemen’s internationally recognized government in restoring state institutions and overcoming the Houthi takeover.

Riyadh has articulated its ongoing efforts since the Houthis seized control of Yemen’s government in 2014, advocating for a comprehensive and lasting political resolution. However, it has accused the Houthis of choosing continued military escalation, which has led to increasing humanitarian and economic distress for the Yemeni population. Saudi Arabia also appealed to the international community, urging it to support the Yemeni government in countering the threats posed by the Houthis.

Advancements in Yemen’s military operations

This statement from Saudi Arabia coincided with an announcement from Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, unveiling a military operation called “Dawn of Yemen.” The operation aims to reclaim the capital city of Sanaa and restore governance in regions overtaken by the Houthis. Following this declaration, the Yemeni military reported that it had secured control of Bab el-Mandeb and the key coastal city of Mokha, making progress along Yemen’s western coastline. The Houthis have yet to issue a response regarding these developments.

The situation escalated further when, on July 20, the Houthis declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia. This action was purportedly a retaliation for what they term a Saudi blockade affecting Houthi-held areas in Yemen. Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has been at the forefront of a coalition aimed at supporting Yemen’s recognized government in its fight against the Houthi movement, which has been accused of receiving backing from Iran.

In conclusion, as the conflict continues to evolve, the possibility of a diplomatic resolution remains uncertain. The ramifications of ongoing attacks and military operations have left the region in a precarious situation that demands urgent international attention and intervention.
