Saudi Arabia Launches Its First Electric Vehicle ‘Exobot’ — A 1,111-Horsepower Powerhouse Developed with Foxconn and BMW Technology — BigGo Finance

Saudi Arabia is making a bold move into the electric vehicle (EV) industry with the launch of its first locally produced brand. Introducing the premium electric sedan and SUV branded as “Exobot” on the 21st of last month in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), the vehicles are geared to showcase the nation’s commitment to diversifying its economy. With an impressive peak output of 1,111 horsepower and an acceleration time of just 2.1 seconds, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized the Exobot as “a new growth engine for the Saudi economy.”

Ceer Motors: A Joint Venture to Redefine EV Manufacturing

The Exobot is a product of Ceer Motors, a joint collaboration formed in November 2022 between Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Taiwan’s Foxconn, the leading IT contract manufacturer worldwide. This initiative plays a crucial role in “Saudi Vision 2030,” aiming to reduce the kingdom’s reliance on oil by establishing a robust manufacturing sector. The Saudi government has been heavily investing in this endeavor, marking a significant step in its economic transformation.

Design and Specifications of the Exobot

The Exobot showcases a unique exterior crafted by Rob Melville, a former designer for McLaren, taking inspiration from Saudi architecture and the nation’s national bird, the Shaheen falcon. One standout feature is its impressive upward-opening wing doors that stretch nearly 3 meters, with automotive critics likening its appearance to something from a futuristic video game.

In terms of performance, the Exobot includes a 112 kWh battery optimized with an 800V high-voltage architecture, featuring three electric motors that produce a considerable 1,111 horsepower. The sedan boasts a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) range of 670 km, while the SUV can reach 560 km. Fast charging capabilities allow the vehicle to go from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. Built to withstand the region’s extreme temperatures, the Exobot incorporates advanced features like triple silver-coated glass and a dual climate control system, capable of cooling the cabin from 65°C to a comfortable 32°C in just 10 minutes.

A Global Tech Collaboration

Ceer Motors stands out for blending Saudi capital with cutting-edge technology sourced from around the world. Foxconn delivers the vehicle’s foundational architecture, electronics, smart cockpit features, and autonomous driving tech. Meanwhile, BMW lends its expertise through licensing of core components, and Rimac, a Croatian electric supercar manufacturer, provides the electric motors and gearbox. Other partners, including Hyundai and Siemens, further contribute to this multinational endeavor, allowing Ceer Motors to rapidly build local production capabilities without starting from scratch.

This approach signifies a well-thought-out strategy to overcome challenges that have previously thwarted the automotive sector in the region. Historically, Saudi Arabia’s attempts at establishing a domestic vehicle manufacturing industry have faced setbacks, such as the cancellation of projects with major players like Toyota. With a burgeoning local market and government support for procurement, Ceer Motors is determined to solve past challenges while promoting domestic automotive capabilities.

Future Prospects and Remaining Challenges

Ceer Motors aims not only to manufacture vehicles but to create a comprehensive automotive industry in Saudi Arabia. This intent aligns with targets set to generate approximately $8 billion in GDP contributions, enhance the trade balance by around $21 billion, and create 30,000 direct and indirect job opportunities by 2034. Despite these ambitious aspirations, skepticism lingers regarding localization rates and technological independence, given the reliance on foreign partners for core technologies.

Moreover, establishing adequate charging infrastructure and providing reliable after-sales service across the Middle East will require significant time and investment. As the Exobot begins mass production in January 2027, it will be crucial to validate its performance in the extreme conditions typical of the region. The success of Ceer Motors will depend significantly on its ability to capitalize on government support and establish a strong market presence through both the premium branding of its vehicles and potential future mass-market models.
