Saudi Arabia Railways Secures 0M Deal for 10 Additional Stadler Intercity Trains – Updates and Insights

Saudi Arabia Railways has made a significant move by exercising an option from a previous contract, resulting in an order for ten additional intercity trains from Stadler. This decision boosts their fleet to a total of 20 specially designed train sets tailored for the unique conditions of the kingdom.

Details of the New Train Order

The new contract, valued at over 300 million Swiss francs (approximately $360 million), entails extending the current maintenance agreement to encompass the newly ordered vehicles. Notably, these trains are set to be manufactured in Switzerland and are part of a finance agreement established at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin, showcasing the partnership between Saudi Arabia Railways and Stadler.

Engineering Innovations for Extreme Conditions

These intercity trains have been developed to combat the harsh environmental conditions typical to Saudi Arabia, including extreme heat and sand. The vehicles measure 175 meters in length and consist of two independent power cars. They feature multiple redundant systems and specialized protection and filtration technologies to ensure reliable operation. Each train has the capacity to carry around 320 passengers while adhering to high international travel standards.

Manufacturing Locations and Strategic Vision

While the majority of manufacturing will occur at Stadler’s facilities in Switzerland, the car bodies for the power components will be produced in Valencia, Spain. Lucius Gerig, the Executive Vice President of Stadler, highlighted that the exercise of the contract option signifies trust and acknowledges the high standards of technology and passenger comfort achieved.

Saudi Arabia Railways views this development as pivotal to its strategic objective to modernize and expand its passenger rail services. This is aligned with the broader goals of enhancing operational readiness and customer service while addressing the growing demand for train transport in line with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics and Saudi Vision 2030.

Strengthening Partnerships for Future Growth

By doubling the fleet size, Saudi Arabia Railways emphasizes the strength of its collaboration with Stadler. This continuation of their partnership is not only a testament to the trust built over years but also embodies the railway’s commitment to advanced technological solutions in an era of rapid growth in transportation services. The commitment to integrating modern technology into their operations marks a significant step toward a more efficient and expansive rail system in the kingdom.
