Their strategic significance is underscored by their proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—an essential maritime route that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The recent seizure of these locations not only strengthens the Houthi position but also presents additional challenges for Yemen’s government forces.
With Iran having restricted access further north at the Strait of Hormuz, control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has become increasingly vital for Saudi oil exports. The Houthis’ alignment with Iran means they could potentially threaten shipping lanes, giving Iran greater leverage in its confrontations with the United States and its allies.
