Trump Calls Riyadh Airport Attack ‘Appalling,’ Suggests US Might Support Saudi Strikes on Houthis in Yemen

US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States may consider participating in military actions alongside Saudi Arabia against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. This statement follows a tragic attack on the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which resulted in twelve fatalities and injuries to over 300 individuals, as reported by Saudi civil aviation authorities.

Trump’s Remarks on Military Involvement

When asked if the United States would join Saudi airstrikes, Trump stated, “We may. We’re going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack. We will make a decision. We move very quickly.” He expressed his sentiments about the assault, describing it as a “terrible thing” while acknowledging the combat capabilities of Saudi forces. The attack, which occurred on October 10, 2022, marks the deadliest incident in a Gulf nation since the onset of the Iran conflict, signaling an escalation in the ongoing struggle between Iran-backed Houthi fighters and Saudi-supported government forces in Yemen.

US Issues Travel Advisory

In response to the attack, the US Mission in Saudi Arabia issued a security alert discouraging American nationals from traveling to King Khalid International Airport and the nearby regions. The alert advised travelers to remain vigilant at major Saudi airports due to the potential for flight cancellations, airspace closures, and other travel disruptions. Furthermore, it was indicated that US government employees stationed in Saudi Arabia would need special authorization to operate in King Khalid International Airport, as well as at the airports in Jeddah and Dammam. This heightened caution comes as the latest incidents are anticipated to increase pressure on Saudi allies, including the US, to provide military assistance in Saudi Arabia’s intensified campaign against the Houthis.

Casualties from the Airport Attack

The assault on the airport left twelve individuals dead, including four Saudi citizens and foreign nationals from various countries such as Bangladesh, Palestine, the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Sudan. Those injured were taken to multiple hospitals, with several individuals reported to be in critical condition. According to a local official, the missile targeted a section housing terminals 3 and 4, which primarily serve domestic flights. Over the past week, there have been multiple attacks directed at King Khalid International Airport, with the Houthis claiming responsibility for earlier incidents that resulted in the deaths of three Saudis, including a pilot.

The violence from the Houthi militants has expanded beyond the airport, targeting a range of Saudi interests, including military installations and oil infrastructure, following the renewed military offensive by a Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis. This shift in tactics raises concerns about the potential for further instability in the region.

These developments illustrate an ongoing cycle of violence and retaliation that not only affects the local population but also poses challenges to international diplomacy and security efforts. As the situation evolves, it will be crucial to monitor both the humanitarian impact and the geopolitical ramifications of these attacks.
