Bulgaria Urges EU, NATO, Turkey, and Romania to Support Black Sea Safety

The security landscape in the Black Sea region has significantly escalated, prompting urgent calls from Bulgarian authorities for increased support from the European Union and NATO. This plea for assistance follows a series of alarming attacks on commercial vessels near Bulgaria’s territorial waters, resulting in tragic loss of life and growing concerns about maritime safety.

Attacks Raise Alarm in the Black Sea

On Tuesday, two more ships were reportedly struck off Bulgaria’s coast, raising the estimated death toll among seafarers to over 20 following a week of aggressive maritime assaults. Prime Minister Rumen Radev condemned these attacks, labeling them “absolutely unacceptable.” In response, he convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council and reached out to high-level officials, including the President of the European Commission and the Secretary General of NATO. Additionally, Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov has been in contact with his counterparts in Turkey and Romania to bolster regional security collaboration.

Radev expressed the ambiguity surrounding the identity of the attackers, stating, “While we lack definitive evidence pointing to either side, logic indicates that the outcome benefits the Russian Federation.” The Prime Minister is scheduled to summon the Russian Ambassador for further discussions, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the assaults. Officials noted that there is “no logic” in Ukraine attacking its own shipping vessels, suggesting that the situation is more complex than initially presumed.

International Reactions and Consequences

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed Radev’s concerns, describing the situation as “unacceptable” and highlighting that the Black Sea has become another front in the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. She called for accountability for those responsible for the recent maritime violence. As tensions escalate, Bulgaria is actively exploring ways to enhance its maritime and airspace surveillance in a bid to protect its interests and that of its neighbors in the region.

The prime minister’s office shared updates on the incidents, stating that as of early October 13, the Border Police dispatched a crewed vessel to assist the embattled cargo ship Chelsea-3, which had reported damage near Bulgaria’s shore. Owned by Ukrainian interests and flagged in Malta, the Chelsea-3 was empty and en route to Moldova when it encountered danger. Bulgarian authorities indicated that three drones struck the vessel, injuring several crew members who were subsequently rescued and taken for medical care.

Calls for Increased Regional Collaboration

Additionally, in the wake of the attacks, Bulgaria has highlighted its intentions to collaborate with NATO and EU allies to investigate the drone strikes thoroughly. Recent operations by Bulgarian teams searching the Black Sea were met with challenges, as they failed to find discernible debris among the wreckage of the damaged vessels. Despite not being a combatant in the ongoing conflict, Bulgaria has acknowledged that it faces dire economic repercussions from the escalating situation at sea.

The instances of attacks on shipping vessels not only heighten military tensions but also threaten to spill over into broader regional conflicts if not addressed swiftly. As Bulgaria rallies support from its allies, the situation in the Black Sea remains precarious, underscoring the need for joint efforts to ensure maritime stability and security.
