Erdogan Calls for Resolution of Thailand Border Conflict as Türkiye and Cambodia Finalize Defense Agreement

Türkiye and Cambodia have recently strengthened their defense collaboration by signing a military framework agreement in Istanbul. This significant development comes as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan advocates for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand. The signing took place at Dolmabahce Palace in the presence of high-ranking officials from both nations, including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Advocating for Diplomacy in Southeast Asia

Erdogan emphasized the importance of Cambodia as a vital partner within Southeast Asia, highlighting the rapid advancement of bilateral relations in recent years. He stated that dialogue is essential for finding a lasting solution to the territorial conflicts with Thailand, underscoring the need for adherence to international law. Tensions have been inflamed by long-standing territorial disputes, despite a ceasefire that ended a period of violence in late 2025, which resulted in considerable human suffering and economic displacement for many.

The Turkish President confirmed Türkiye’s ongoing humanitarian efforts, noting that the country has assisted over 3,000 civilians affected by the conflict in coordination with Cambodian authorities. Erdogan’s call for peaceful negotiations stands as a critical reminder of the importance of diplomatic engagement in resolving regional disputes.

Deepening Economic and Military Relations

The meeting between both leaders also aimed to enhance economic ties. Discussions covered a range of topics such as trade, energy, and education, with the goal of reaching a $1 billion bilateral trade target, a figure established in 2018 during a prior visit from former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. Erdogan expressed optimism that the Türkiye-Cambodia Business Forum would further solidify these economic connections and lead to fruitful investment opportunities.

Moreover, Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the military framework agreement, regarding it as a pivotal step in fostering stronger political and defense collaboration between the two nations. He acknowledged Türkiye’s growing influence on the global stage and its proactive role in promoting stability, especially within the Middle East.

Future Prospects for Cooperation

Manet also highlighted the potential for Cambodia to act as a bridge for Turkish businesses aiming to access broader Asian markets through partnerships in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. Both leaders reiterated the need for collaborative efforts to tackle common challenges on various international platforms, including the United Nations and ASEAN. In this regard, the Cambodian Prime Minister welcomed Türkiye’s designation as an ASEAN dialogue partner, signifying a commitment to advancing regional cooperation and shared prosperity.

The discussions culminated in a mutual invitation for further engagement, with Manet extending an invitation for Erdogan to visit Cambodia. This symbolizes not only the deepening ties between the two nations but also the promise of ongoing collaboration aimed at achieving peace, development, and mutual interests.

Through initiatives like these, Türkiye and Cambodia are carving out a path for enhanced defense cooperation and economic growth, not only benefiting their respective nations but also contributing to greater stability and prosperity within the Southeast Asian region.
