Greek Monk Disappears in Turkey After Departing from Giannitsa – The Greek Herald

A 58-year-old Greek Orthodox monk, known as Joseph and originally named Nikolaos Tsigozis, has been unaccounted for in Turkey for nearly three months. He embarked on a journey from his home in Giannitsa to explore his family’s ancestral roots in Pontus and Cappadocia but has not been heard from since his departure.

Journey to Ancestral Roots

Joseph left Neos Mylotopos on July 23 with aspirations of connecting with his heritage and living a life of solitude as a hermit. His family uncovered a bus ticket in his name, which led them to trace his steps to Turkey. The last confirmed sighting of him was reported by the Greek Consulate in Istanbul. On July 25, a man resembling Joseph entered the consulate seeking directions to Pontus. Unfortunately, no additional information has been provided since that moment, leaving his family anxious and in distress over his fate.

Family’s Plea for Information

The situation has gained attention, most recently being featured on the Greek television show “Light at the End of the Tunnel.” There, Joseph’s sisters made an emotional plea, urging anyone who may have seen him or possesses any knowledge regarding his whereabouts to step forward. The family’s quest to locate Joseph has been intensified after learning he might have aimed to travel to Trabzon, a city significant to his family’s heritage, though his current whereabouts remain uncertain.

Involvement of Authorities

The Greek authorities and Interpol have been informed of Joseph’s disappearance. His family is actively collaborating with these agencies and remains deeply concerned. Described as approximately 1.64 meters tall, with long grey hair typically kept in a ponytail, a grey moustache, and a short beard, Joseph’s distinctive physical attributes may aid in identifying him.

A Call for Public Assistance

In their ongoing search, Joseph’s relatives hope that increased public awareness could lead to vital information on his status. Anyone who might have encountered the monk or has insight regarding his journey is strongly encouraged to reach out to local authorities. The family’s ultimate aim is to ensure his safety and well-being, as they navigate this distressing situation with hope and determination.
