Green sea turtle hatchlings make their way to the Mediterranean in Turkey.

Green sea turtle hatchlings are making their way to the Mediterranean Sea in Türkiye’s Mersin province, following their emergence from nests this summer. These hatchlings, which began to surface from nests at Davultepe 100th Year Nature Park in the Mezitli district since May, mark an important moment in the life cycle of these remarkable creatures.

Significance of Mersin for Sea Turtles

Under the guidance of Mahmut Ergene, an educator from Mersin University’s Sea Turtle Research and Application Center, students and researchers are actively monitoring the hatchlings as they dig their way through the sand towards the sea. Ergene emphasized that Mersin serves as a crucial habitat for sea turtles, with about 80% of hatchlings from nests laid during May and June successfully emerging this season.

However, Ergene observed a noticeable decline in hatchlings at Davultepe beach compared to previous years. He pointed out that fluctuations in population numbers are a natural aspect of the sea turtle life cycle, occurring every few years. He remains optimistic, stating that he anticipates an increase in nesting numbers in the upcoming years, as nature continues its cycles.

Public Awareness and Conservation Efforts

Ergene has urged the public to exercise caution and sensitivity in areas where sea turtle nests are found. He stressed the importance of not disturbing the nests, explaining that sea turtles are wild animals that must develop the skills necessary to survive on their own once they emerge. Contrary to the good intentions of some, attempting to transport the hatchlings to the sea by hand can be detrimental to their development.

He encouraged those who wish to assist in the survival of hatchlings to focus on cleaning the beach, removing plastics and other hazards that could obstruct their journey. The Sea Turtle Research and Application Center actively engages in both conservation and public education efforts, significantly raising awareness about the challenges facing sea turtles in Mersin.

Future of Sea Turtles in Türkiye

The ongoing research and conservation initiatives at Mersin University not only aid in the protection of these magnificent creatures but also create educational opportunities for students and the public alike. By fostering a collective sense of responsibility and awareness, the center aims to improve the conditions for sea turtles in the area. As efforts continue, there is hope for a resurgence in hatchling numbers, contributing to the long-term survival of this species in Türkiye.

In conclusion, as green sea turtle hatchlings navigate their way to the Mediterranean, the efforts of local researchers and public participation play a pivotal role in their survival. By promoting responsible behavior and enhancing community awareness, Mersin strives to create a safe environment for these vital marine creatures, ensuring they thrive for generations to come.
