US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee expressed optimism regarding Turkey’s potential role as a stabilizing influence in the Middle East. In a recent interview with The Jerusalem Post, Huckabee shared his thoughts on Turkey’s intentions in the region.

## Uncertain Turkish Intentions

Huckabee stated, “I’m not sure we fully grasp whether Turkey is a positive or negative force.” He emphasized the hope that Turkey might choose to take on a beneficial role in promoting stability within the region. His remarks come on the heels of heightened tensions following Israel’s military actions in Syria.

On August 18, Israel targeted Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase, coinciding with Turkey’s deployment of troops and air-defense systems to the same location. In response to the airstrike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked, “Israel will persist in standing firm against any efforts by Turkey to disrupt regional stability and challenge its security.”

## Warning through Airstrikes

Huckabee characterized Israel’s recent airstrike as a cautionary action. Drawing an analogy from baseball, he explained how a skilled pitcher deliberately throws a pitch close to the batter to signal that they are overstepping boundaries. “This airstrike served as a warning, reminding Turkey that encroachment could have dire consequences,” Huckabee stated.

He clarified that the military action did not result in casualties or significant damage, with only the airbase’s runway being affected. Huckabee viewed it as an effort to nudge Turkey back from aggressive actions. “The message was clear: step back, or there will be severe repercussions,” he concluded.

## Rising Criticism from Turkey

Amid ongoing military tensions, Turkey’s leadership, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has intensified criticisms of Israel. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned Israel, describing it as “a burden for humanity that can no longer be tolerated.” Huckabee expressed concern over such comments, signaling that they may lead to increased hostility and further destabilization in the region.

Additionally, Huckabee pointed to the financial ties between Turkey and Hamas in Gaza as a significant concern. “This pathway of funding is alarming and warrants our vigilant attention,” he noted. He underscored that any added instability in the already volatile Middle East would be catastrophic.

## Diplomatic Initiatives

Efforts to bridge the gap between Israel and Turkey are underway, particularly through the influence of US President Donald Trump. Huckabee highlighted Trump’s strong relationship with both Turkey’s Erdogan and Israel’s Netanyahu, which he hopes can facilitate dialogue and reduce tensions between the two nations.

Furthermore, the US administration is actively working to open channels of communication among Israel, Turkey, and Syria. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack is leading these initiatives, aimed at easing tensions following the recent airstrike. This diplomatic outreach included a meeting between Mossad Director Roman Gofman and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, focused on preventing further escalations.

In Huckabee’s view, it’s crucial to foster open lines of communication to preempt conflict. He stated, “Before situations spiral out of control, it’s essential that discussions take place to lower the temperature and encourage cooperation among the nations involved.”

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, Huckabee’s statements underscore the challenges and opportunities for diplomacy in the region. The hope is that Turkey, Israel, and their neighbors can find a way to work together for a more stable Middle East.
