Turkey Advocates for Sustainable Resolution for Persecuted Rohingya, Says Foreign Minister in Bangladesh

Türkiye is actively collaborating with neighboring nations and international organizations to find a lasting and equitable resolution to the Rohingya crisis. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the importance of maintaining global attention on this humanitarian issue during a press conference with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in Dhaka.

Solidarity in Addressing the Rohingya Crisis

Minister Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to working alongside relevant countries and organizations to tackle the plight of the Rohingya people. He lauded Bangladesh for its exceptional humanitarian efforts in hosting over one million Rohingya refugees, calling this commitment a historic sacrifice for humanity. He stated, “The suffering of Rohingya Muslims continues, and Bangladesh’s role over the years in sheltering them is commendable and reflects its dedication to human rights.”

During his visit, Fidan plans to inspect refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, where he will evaluate various humanitarian initiatives conducted by Turkish institutions, such as the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and the Turkish Red Crescent. His tour will also include a visit to a Turkish field hospital in the area, underscoring Türkiye’s dedicated role in humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya community. He emphasized that efforts will persist to enhance their living conditions while supporting their safe and dignified return to Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where the crisis originated.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Minister Fidan congratulated his Bangladeshi counterpart on his recent election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. He remarked that this victory is a testament to Bangladesh’s rising stature on the global stage. The upcoming elections and referendum in Bangladesh signify the beginning of a new chapter for the country, with Türkiye showing strong support for its democratic processes.

In line with their discussions, the two foreign ministers focused on enhancing bilateral trade, aiming to increase it from $1.3 billion to $2 billion. Additionally, Fidan signed a memorandum of understanding with Bangladesh’s Cultural Affairs Minister, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, to safeguard cultural heritage. This partnership aims to reflect a commitment to preserving a shared cultural legacy and creating a positive impact on both nations.

Focus on Regional Stability

Fidan highlighted that promoting stability, security, and prosperity in the region is a primary concern for Turkish foreign policy. He voiced concerns regarding the implications that regional conflicts are having on broader global dynamics. In discussing tensions involving Iran, he noted that US-Israeli military actions have repercussions that extend beyond the region, affecting international relations and stability.

The ongoing efforts by Türkiye and its partners illustrate a broader dedication to addressing the pressing humanitarian issues faced by the Rohingya people. By reinforcing bilateral relationships and focusing on cooperative initiatives, both Türkiye and Bangladesh are making strides toward stability and shared prosperity in a complex geopolitical landscape.
