Turkey calls on the global community to respond to Israel’s breaches of international law.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza and the violation of international law by Israel have drawn significant condemnation from global leaders. Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus has emphasized the necessity for the international community to voice its concerns and take decisive action against these violations. During a recent speech at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Rome, he articulated a call to uphold international law, stressing that ignoring these transgressions is no longer an option.

The Need for Accountability

Kurtulmus articulated that the culture of impunity surrounding Israel’s actions must be addressed. He stated, “We cannot let impunity go unpunished,” highlighting the urgent need for the international community to take meaningful steps in enforcing international laws. The situation in Gaza, marked by severe humanitarian crises and ongoing violence, exemplifies the dire consequences of neglecting these legal frameworks. He urged that it is not merely a political issue; rather, it reflects a test of humanity’s collective moral standards.

The humanitarian devastation in Gaza represents a broader crisis in the region, as Kurtulmus pointed out that violent actions are not limited to this territory alone. Residents in the West Bank also face destruction, displacement, and violence from settlers, further complicating an already dire situation. The Israeli government’s actions threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighboring nations, including Syria and Lebanon. Kurtulmus underscored the necessity for parliaments across the world to take a proactive stance in mitigating this suffering and addressing the violations of humanitarian law.

Challenges to the International Order

The failures of the current international order in preventing conflicts were another critical point raised by Kurtulmus. He referenced the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine as an example of how the international community has struggled to manage conflicts effectively. The ramifications of this war are being felt throughout Europe, shifting the dynamics of a regional conflict into a broader crisis. Additionally, Kurtulmus highlighted the international community’s inability to prevent the genocide occurring in Gaza for over three years.

He warned that the legitimacy and effectiveness of the rules-based international order are under significant threat. To restore its credibility, it is crucial for parliaments to actively participate in creating and supporting new frameworks and agreements that can address these persistent issues. This requires a shift in focus toward parliamentary diplomacy, which has the potential to complement traditional diplomatic efforts and foster communication in challenging scenarios.

Kurtulmus insisted that relying solely on the United Nations and conventional reform efforts to resolve crises would not suffice. A collective, coordinated approach among parliaments can significantly bolster international efforts to uphold and reinforce international law. By amplifying their voices and taking decisive actions, parliaments can play a critical role in holding violators accountable and promoting peace and security in the affected regions.

The plea from Kurtulmus serves as a reminder that the global community must act decisively against violations of humanitarian law and the moral imperative to respond to human suffering. As the conflicts in Gaza and beyond continue, the need for heightened international cooperation and accountability becomes increasingly critical.
