Türkiye has recently initiated the testing phase of the Altay main battle tank’s (MBT) homegrown transmission system. This update was shared by a representative from BMC during Exercise ‘EFES 2026′, which took place in Izmir from April 20 to May 21. The Altay tank is a crucial component of Türkiye’s military modernization efforts, and its development reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities.

Progress in Altay Tank Production

Currently, serial production is progressing for the first batch of Altay T1 tanks. These tanks are equipped with a South Korean powerpack that includes a Hyundai Doosan DV27K V12 diesel engine coupled with an S&T Dynamics EST15K automatic transmission. Recent social media updates from Haluk Görgün, the President of the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), confirm that factory acceptance testing for the BMC Power BATU engine, the locally developed power source for future Altay models, was successfully completed by late 2025. However, specifics regarding further testing dates and production timelines remain undisclosed, raising strategic questions about the future of the project.

Challenges in Production Plans

The original plan for the Altay tank’s production aimed for a EuroPowerPack configuration, which was initially based on the MTU diesel engine and RENK transmission system used in the prototype. Unfortunately, these plans were hindered by export restrictions imposed by Germany, stemming from Turkey’s military operations during the Syrian Civil War. This setback has compelled Türkiye to pivot towards alternative solutions, prompting the development of a more self-sufficient domestic defense industry.

In November 2018, a contract was announced between Türkiye and BMC for the production of 250 Altay tanks destined for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). On February 24, 2025, Görgün disclosed that mass production had officially commenced. The timeline indicates that by 2028, 85 tanks in the T1 configuration (featuring the South Korean powerpack) are expected to be delivered. Furthermore, the subsequent rollout of 165 T2 Altay tanks, powered by an indigenous Turkish engine, is projected to begin in the same year.
