Turkey Targets Biomethane Exports to Europe Through Uniper-Biotrend Partnership

Türkiye is on the verge of exporting biomethane derived from organic waste to Europe, following a significant partnership between the Turkish company Biotrend and the German energy firm Uniper. This agreement involves a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at transitioning biogas plants into facilities focused on biomethane production, marking a pivotal step in Türkiye’s energy strategy and its contribution to European decarbonization efforts.

Details of the Uniper-Biotrend Partnership

The MoU was formalized during the Türkiye-North Rhine-Westphalia Business Forum, which is intended to explore the conversion of Biotrend’s biogas facilities into biomethane production centers. This initiative will not only enhance production capacity but also utilize Türkiye’s existing natural gas infrastructure for delivering biomethane to European markets. Biotrend, a part of Doganlar Holding, has an estimated biomethane production capacity of about 1.4 terawatt-hours per year, a fact highlighted by Hakan Goral, CEO of Doganlar Holding. The organization’s strategy focuses on a gradual transformation that maximizes the use of current infrastructure while prioritizing plants with greater biomethane potential.

Biomethane is generated through a purification process that removes impurities from biogas, such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. In the initial phase of this transition, Biotrend plans to conduct feasibility studies to assess the technical and economic viability of its facilities. Goral emphasized the importance of evaluating various metrics, including biogas production capacity and sustainability compliance, to ensure successful implementation.

Challenges and Future Steps

Uniper’s CEO, Michael Lewis, acknowledged that while the collaboration represents a step forward, there are still regulatory, commercial, and technical hurdles to overcome. He stated, “We are still at the beginning, but we believe there is significant market potential in the long term.” The project, still conceptual with no set timelines, will focus on verifying biomethane volumes for injection into existing gas pipelines, which is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of the supply chain.

Biotrend aims to establish a biomethane value chain that extends from Türkiye to Europe by 2040, aligning with their goal for carbon neutrality. The initiative highlights a commitment to creating a circular economy that utilizes Türkiye’s organic waste and biogas potential not only for electricity generation but also for renewable gas production. Goral asserted that the success of exporting biomethane hinges on four essential factors: technical suitability, effective operational practices, robust legal frameworks, and sustainability certifications.

The transition towards biomethane production in Türkiye positions the country as a promising player in the European energy sector. By tapping into its substantial biogas potential, Türkiye could serve as an alternative, renewable energy source to help meet Europe’s growing demand for sustainable energy solutions.

As the groundwork for this collaboration develops, stakeholders and industry experts will closely monitor progress. The implications of successfully exporting biomethane could lead to a more integrated energy market and contribute significantly to the decarbonization targets set forth by European nations. The transition to biomethane holds the promise of a greener future, benefiting both Türkiye and its European partners in the fight against climate change.
