In Türkiye, significant advancements are being made in the construction of a nuclear power plant that aims to significantly augment the nation’s energy supply. With a workforce estimated at 23,000 individuals and an array of 2,000 pieces of machinery operating continuously, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is gaining momentum. The first of its four 1.2 GW units is currently undergoing testing, setting the stage for a transformative energy future.

Projected Energy Contributions

Upon becoming fully operational, the initial unit is anticipated to account for approximately 2-2.5% of Türkiye’s overall electricity requirement. When all four units are online, Akkuyu is projected to generate roughly 35 billion kWh of electricity annually. This output is expected to meet about 10% of the nation’s energy consumption, comparable to the yearly electricity demands of a major city like Istanbul. The plant’s scale underscores the importance of nuclear energy in achieving energy independence for Türkiye.

Collaboration and Local Development

The Akkuyu project is a collaboration with Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, stemming from a memorandum signed in 2010. The facility is designed for an initial operational lifespan of 60 years, with the opportunity for a 20-year extension, exemplifying long-term planning in energy infrastructure. Notably, work is progressing not only on the first unit but also on the subsequent three units. Current activities include mechanical operations at Unit 2, while construction for Units 3 and 4 is advancing steadily.

Building Domestic Expertise in Nuclear Energy

Akkuyu is more than just a power plant; it represents a shift toward developing Türkiye’s expertise in nuclear technology. Turkish authorities report a localization rate exceeding 50%, involving over 400 local businesses in the construction and operation phases. Furthermore, hundreds of Turkish professionals have gained valuable experience and knowledge by studying in Russian universities, paving the way for a skilled workforce poised to address future challenges in the nuclear energy sector.

Environmental Considerations and Future Expansion

The Akkuyu plant will also bring environmental benefits; once all four units become operational, it is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 35 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalents annually. This contribution aligns with Türkiye’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The project signifies not only a step towards energy self-sufficiency but also a broader expansion into nuclear energy, with plans for eight additional reactors and advances in small modular reactor technologies on the horizon.
