Turkey to Slowly Transfer Bashiqa-Zilkan Base to Iraq, Says Defense Ministry

The Turkish Armed Forces are poised to transition control of a military base in northern Iraq’s Bashiqa-Zilkan region back to Iraqi authorities. This marks a significant development in regional security dynamics, particularly given the ongoing efforts to stabilize the area after the fight against ISIS.

Gradual Handover of Bashiqa-Zilkan Base

On October 1, 2026, the Turkish National Defense Ministry announced that the handover of the Bashiqa-Zilkan Base, which has been operational since 2015, will be executed in a phased manner. The base was established at the request of the Iraqi government to combat the ISIS threat. Officials emphasized that the transfer will be conducted according to an agreed timeline, taking into account advancements made by the Iraqi central government in terms of security efforts in regions like Sinjar.

Türkiye has recognized the Iraqi government’s actions aimed at reasserting state authority in Sinjar and views these moves as a positive step towards regional normalization. The ministry has expressed belief that these developments will not only foster security and stability but ultimately create a terror-free environment. This commitment underscores Türkiye’s ongoing support for Iraq in its quest to ensure a unified and secure state.

Military Cooperation and Support

In its ongoing commitment to bolster security, the Turkish Defense Ministry has highlighted plans to enhance military collaboration with Iraq. Türkiye intends to provide continued support to the Iraqi Armed Forces under existing agreements, focusing on strategic areas such as improving military capabilities, sharing counterterrorism expertise, and facilitating military training. Such cooperative efforts are seen as essential for cultivating a robust defense posture in the region.

Furthermore, Türkiye insists that its backing will remain steadfast as Iraq navigates intricate security challenges. The Turkish ministry reinforced its role as a regional partner dedicated to stability, indicating that it will take necessary actions to ensure the wellbeing of both nations.

Tensions in Cyprus

In a separate statement, the Turkish Defense Ministry voiced concerns regarding a recent military parade conducted by the Greek Cypriot Administration. The ministry pointed out that the ongoing arms buildup and military alliances with external nations are detrimental to the fragile security dynamics on the island of Cyprus. Actions deemed provocative by the Greek side have prompted concerns that they may worsen tensions and impede efforts aimed at building mutual trust.

As a guarantor nation, Türkiye maintains that a sustainable resolution to the Cyprus issue hinges on acknowledging the Turkish Cypriots’ sovereign equality and international status. In collaboration with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Türkiye is committed to taking necessary security measures to protect the interests of Turkish Cypriots, thereby ensuring peace and stability on the island.

Acquisition of C-130J Aircraft from the UK

Regarding the procurement of military assets, the Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed the timeline for acquiring 12 C-130J aircraft from the United Kingdom. Following maintenance work currently being carried out in the UK, the first two aircraft are set to arrive in Türkiye by December. Concurrently, training programs for operational personnel are underway, featuring six pilots and six technicians trained in the United States and 29 maintenance personnel in the UK.

This acquisition is part of Türkiye’s broader strategy to modernize its military capabilities and ensure operational readiness. The seamless progression of these training and procurement initiatives reflects Türkiye’s unwavering commitment to enhancing its defense infrastructure while bolstering cooperation with allied nations.
