Turkish defense firm Baykar has made significant strides with its Akinci unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV). Recently, the Akinci achieved a major milestone by successfully targeting a high-speed drone using the indigenous Sungur air defense missile in a test over the Black Sea.
Successful Launch from Corlu Flight Training Center
The Akinci took off from the Corlu Flight Training and Test Center situated in Tekirdag, Marmara province. After its ascent, the drone proceeded to the designated test area over the Black Sea, where it engaged in a critical evaluation of its capabilities. This test highlights the increasing sophistication of Turkey’s defense technology and its burgeoning capabilities in aerial warfare.
In a demonstration off the coast of Sinop, the Akinci fired the Sungur missile, successfully striking the high-speed target. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the Sungur air defense missile, developed by the renowned Turkish defense company Roketsan. The successful engagement of a dynamic target showcases the Akinci’s robust targeting systems and its versatility in combat scenarios.
Expanding Akinci’s Capabilities
The Akinci is not limited to air-to-air combat; it has previously performed firing tests with various munitions, including the AI-based Kemankes mini cruise missile and the Eren multi-purpose loitering munition. The company has secured export agreements with 39 countries, encompassing 36 contracts for its Bayraktar TB2 and 16 for the Akinci UCAV.
