In South Sudan, communities facing water shortages are about to experience significant relief thanks to a solar-powered borehole inaugurated by the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation in Kwerjik. This development marks a crucial step toward addressing the urgent need for clean drinking water in the region, where many residents have struggled with limited access to safe water sources.
Transforming Water Access in Kwerjik
The newly established water system, located near Juba, features an automatic pumping mechanism and two substantial water tanks. Together, they can provide about 4,000 liters (approximately 1,057 gallons) of clean water each day to residents who previously relied on a nearby stream. The stream often becomes contaminated during the dry season, raising the risk of health issues associated with unsafe drinking water. The solar-powered system not only promises a more dependable water source but also aims to cut down reliance on potentially hazardous water scenarios.
For years, Kwerjik residents had no option but to fetch water from this unreliable stream. With the new borehole in place, the community can look forward to a healthier way of life free from the health risks posed by dirty water. Osman Turk, the African representative for the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, emphasized the Turkish government’s dedication to assisting South Sudanese people. “We are excited to be here in Kwerjik. Water is vital for life, and we are committed to supporting our brothers and sisters here,” he stated during the inauguration ceremony, expressing hope for strengthened relations between the nations.
Community Voices on Water Challenges
Residents like Mary Sebila, a mother of three, shared how the new water pump is a transformative resource. “The construction of this borehole is incredibly helpful. We often had to rely on dirty water from the stream, especially during dry spells,” she recounted. Sebila expressed gratitude for the assistance provided, noting that many in Kwerjik have faced escalating challenges in securing clean drinking water. “Without this support, it would be difficult; we cannot even determine how many people need water here,” she added.
Community chief Machar Butic expressed his appreciation to both the South Sudanese and Turkish governments, underscoring the significant impact of this initiative. “Previously, we had a water pump that broke down, leaving us back at square one. With thousands of residents depending on this resource, we are immensely thankful for the new infrastructure,” he explained. Butic also highlighted the pressing need for continued assistance from various aid agencies to ensure Kwerjik, Natoro, and Nus have access to sufficient clean water.

Youth representative Albino Mayom Awer voiced the community’s gratitude for the contributions made by the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation. Awer stressed the importance of continued cooperation between South Sudan and Turkey to address water scarcity issues in Kwerjik. He remarked, “We thank the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation for their support. We are pleased that the leaders of both countries are working diligently to solve our water problems.”
Suzan Karaba, representing the women of Kwerjik, reiterated the hardships that the community continues to face due to inadequate water supplies. “We have been struggling with insufficient drinking water for too long. We urgently need more support,” she implored, noting that school children travel long distances to fetch water. Karaba’s statement encapsulates the pressing need for sustainable solutions in Kwerjik and highlights the importance of ongoing partnerships to secure essential resources for vulnerable populations in the region.
