Shifting Investment Trends in Türkiye

The landscape of U.S. investments in Türkiye is undergoing significant transformation, moving away from traditional capital- and labor-intensive models toward innovative sectors that enhance technology transfer. This shift reflects the evolving priorities of American investors who are increasingly drawn to high-value industries.

Factors Fueling Investment Growth

According to Emre Karter, the chair of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Türkiye, several factors contribute to Türkiye’s attractiveness for U.S. investors. The country’s robust industrial foundation, skilled labor force, and strategic access to diverse markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia are pivotal in maintaining and enhancing U.S.-Türkiye economic relations. In recent years, the bilateral trade volume has accelerated, with both nations targeting a joint trade goal of $100 billion. In 2022, trade between Türkiye and the U.S. reached approximately $38 billion, and projections indicate a growth of over 10% to around $42-43 billion by the year’s end. If this positive trajectory continues, it is anticipated that the annual trade volume may hit $50 billion within the next two years.

This surge in commercial activity is underpinned by substantial mutual investments. From 2003 to 2025, direct U.S. investments in Türkiye have reached about $16 billion, as evidenced by over 2,300 American firms operating within the country. Conversely, Turkish investments in the U.S. total approximately $14 billion during the same period. Karter emphasizes the importance of understanding the expectations of American companies investing in high-value sectors such as healthcare, energy, and technology to further enhance the investment landscape.

Strategies for Sustainable Growth

Maintaining the active status of the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) is critical for nurturing a sustainable investment environment. Karter argues that trade agreements and mutual investments play supportive roles in achieving the $100 billion target. However, a particular focus on high-value sectors and bolstering the global competitiveness of Turkish firms is essential for sustainable growth. He urges Turkish companies to develop their export capacities, especially in key industries like aerospace, automotive supplies, and life sciences, to meet rigorous U.S. market standards.

Türkiye is increasingly recognized as a crucial hub in global supply chains, a trend accelerated by the ongoing reshaping of these networks and shifting geopolitical dynamics. AmCham views Türkiye as a multifaceted regional hub for management, production, and technology. With member companies leveraging Türkiye as a base for operations across 80 countries, there is significant potential for an uptick in U.S. investments in areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and renewable energy.

Future Landscape of Investment

Looking ahead, the focus on high-value-added fields is expected to create extensive opportunities for investment. Enhancing access to financing, ensuring macroeconomic stability, and establishing a transparent regulatory environment are vital steps toward attracting new capital inflow. Karter mentions that Türkiye’s Investment and Finance Office has emerged as a “one-stop shop” for investor needs, facilitating confidence and paving the way for fresh investments.

In conclusion, as U.S. investment trends shift, Türkiye’s competitive advantages position it for a burgeoning role in high-value industries. By understanding and adapting to investor expectations, focusing on sustainable growth, and embracing innovation, Türkiye is well on its way to achieving its ambitious trade goals and establishing a more robust economic partnership with the United States.
