Residents of a charming coastal town in California have faced an unusual predicament this summer—power outages caused by wild turkeys. This unexpected situation has left many in the community scratching their heads as they navigate the impact of these interruptions.
The Peculiar Cause of Outages
In Cambria, locals have experienced a puzzling uptick in brief power outages since mid-July. These outages, lasting about an hour, commonly occur during daylight and can happen multiple times a day. Residents have found themselves in a scramble, not only trying to prepare for their daily routines but also managing medical devices that depend on a steady power supply. The outages have disrupted business operations as well, especially for local restaurants gearing up for service.
Initially, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) cited that “an animal contacted the powerline” when prompted for an explanation. However, as residents turned to social media for insights, PG&E later confirmed that the wild turkeys were indeed responsible for at least six separate outages in the area since July. “These large birds perch on power lines,” explained PG&E regional communications representative, Stephanie Magallon. “When they take off, their weight causes the lines to swing and potentially touch each other, triggering an automatic power shut-off to prevent a fire.”
Importance of Enhanced Safety Measures
This automatic shutdown process is crucial, especially in regions like Cambria, where the risk of wildfires looms large. PG&E has implemented Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) that activate based on daily wildfire risks. These settings can cut electricity within a tenth of a second when an animal or object contacts the lines. Magallon emphasized, “We evaluate wildfire risk each day to determine when we should turn them on.”
To address this peculiar issue, PG&E crews have worked on modifying the power lines. By creating more space between them, they aim to decrease the chances of wires touching when a turkey either lands or takes off. This proactive approach shows the utility’s commitment to improving reliability while adapting to the challenges posed by local wildlife.
Wild Turkey Behavior in Cambria
Residents have noticed an increase in the wild turkey population in the area, often observing them roosting in trees near power lines. Although turkeys are capable of flight, their takeoff can be clumsy, especially for young ones that have recently fledged. Some locals have reported firsthand accounts of these birds misjudging distances, leading to precarious landings on power lines—a scenario that can lead to hazardous outages.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time wild turkeys have caused power disruptions in Cambria. A similar incident occurred in 2021, where a turkey reportedly struck a power line during an outage affecting much of the community. Although PG&E did not confirm the bird’s involvement at the time, it seems the feathered mischief-makers have a history.
