Abu Dhabi Hosts Landmark Conference on Crime Prevention and Justice

The 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice recently kicked off in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This significant event aims to shape the future of international efforts related to crime prevention and the rule of law over the next five years. The inaugural day concluded with the adoption of the influential “Abu Dhabi Declaration,” which will guide global actions in these critical areas.

Key Outcomes of Day One: The Abu Dhabi Declaration

The first day of the congress was marked by discussions aimed at transforming international legal commitments into practical policies and programs. High-level sessions and specialized meetings were conducted, focusing on crucial topics such as international judicial cooperation, organized crime, and transnational threats. The conference served as a platform for over 97 countries, including more than 32 ministers of justice and interior, to converge and collaborate on pressing criminal justice concerns.

Border security and drug trafficking were also central to the conversations, alongside the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime. There was a strong emphasis on enhancing cooperation related to investigations and the exchange of electronic evidence, which is increasingly vital in our digital era.

Innovative Approaches: AI and Transnational Crime

One notable focus of the discussions was the role of artificial intelligence in crime prevention and the broader context of criminal justice reform. Experts highlighted the importance of governance, transparency, and accountability in utilizing technology while ensuring human oversight remains intact.

Additionally, the conference offered a platform to address environmental crimes, illegal trafficking, and the management of hazardous waste. The misuse of neurotechnology and incidents of gender-based violence facilitated through technological means were also significant topics, illustrating the complexities of modern crime.

Sessions dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable populations, including women, children, and youth, were held. These discussions encompassed strategies to prevent juvenile delinquency, effective prison management, and operational integrity within police forces.

Extensive Participation from Emirati and Global Leaders

The UAE displayed a strong commitment to expanding its judicial cooperation on the international stage. Abdullah Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, the Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Federal Judicial Council, engaged in bilateral talks with counterparts from nations like France, South Africa, Egypt, Vietnam, and Italy. These meetings focused on enhancing legal collaboration and sharing best practices.

Moreover, the congress featured 19 side meetings and engaging sessions within the “Youth Lab,” along with an exhibition showcasing 38 platforms. Among these, six Emirati platforms presented pioneering initiatives aimed at fostering integrity, combatting human trafficking, promoting cyber culture, empowering youth, and looking towards the future.

The congress is set to continue until October 1, offering a series of plenary sessions, workshops, and youth-focused events. It represents a critical opportunity for global leaders to align their priorities and strategies in the realm of crime prevention, criminal justice, and the upholding of the rule of law.
