Reconnecting with the Stars: A Journey into Al Quaa Desert

In the heart of the United Arab Emirates, where towering skyscrapers and vibrant city lights dominate the skyline, many have lost touch with the wonders of the night sky. As the region underwent rapid development fueled by oil wealth, the celestial bodies that once guided the Bedouin through the vast Empty Quarter have become obscured. However, a dedicated group of volunteers from the Dubai Astronomy Group is striving to restore this connection by organizing stargazing excursions to Al Quaa Desert, one of the last dark sanctuaries in the Emirates.

The Impact of Light Pollution in Urban Areas

The UAE faces significant challenges due to light pollution, ranking among the most affected countries worldwide. Numerous Gulf states, with urban populations concentrated in major cities, contribute to this phenomenon. A 2016 study revealed that an astonishing 99% of the Emirates’ residents are unable to view the Milky Way from their homes, owing to excessive artificial light. This includes everything from street lamps lining busy roads to dazzling spectacles like the LED displays at Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building globally, and the planned $1.7 billion Sphere in Abu Dhabi.

Acknowledging these issues, Abu Dhabi has devised a “Dark Sky Policy” aimed at addressing light pollution and its effects throughout the emirate. In Dubai, however, the trend of illuminating buildings and advertising with LED systems continues unabated, underscoring the struggle between urban development and environmental awareness. Yet, amidst the urban brightness, there are some pockets of relative darkness, such as the Al Qudra Lakes, where light pollution is minimal.

Exploring Al Quaa Desert: A Stargazer’s Sanctuary

The Al Quaa Desert, located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Abu Dhabi, offers an unparalleled escape from city lights. Accessible via major highways and roads, it remains a tranquil spot devoid of urban illumination. Despite the occasional overhead street lights on Razeen Road, which leads to the desert, the area beyond is enveloped in darkness, creating the perfect backdrop for stargazing.

On weekends, as families and astronomy enthusiasts gather in this pristine wilderness, the desert becomes a gathering place for those eager to reconnect with the night sky. This is not just a recreational outing; it’s a revival of historical practices where humans connected with the cosmos, much like the ancient Bedouins.

An Evening Under the Milky Way

During recent stargazing events, participants marveled at the celestial wonders laid out before them. Families of diverse backgrounds—speaking Arabic, English, and Russian—lay on carpets, their eyes turning skyward. As the half-moon dipped below the horizon, the ethereal outline of the Milky Way emerged, captivating young and old alike.

As Sheeraz Awan, the general manager of the Dubai Astronomy Group, pointed out constellations and meteor showers, participants were reminded of their connection to the universe. Many gasped in awe as meteors dashed across the sky, their visibility enhanced by the absence of urban light interference. Some attendees gathered around telescopes to examine individual stars, while others perfected their photography skills, using long-exposure techniques to capture the grandeur of the galaxy overhead.

As the night wore on, families returned to their vehicles, slowly resuming their journey back to the illuminated highways and bustling cities. For that fleeting moment, they had engaged with the cosmos just as their ancestors once did, a shared experience that transcends time. “When we look at this Milky Way, we’re participating in an age-old activity,” Awan noted, encapsulating the essence of their night under the stars.

Through these efforts, the Dubai Astronomy Group not only reignites wonder but also serves as a reminder of humanity’s enduring connection to the universe, providing a much-needed escape from the modern world’s relentless brightness.
