NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has proudly introduced the class of 2026-27 for the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program (SMSP), welcoming 24 talented students from various UAE universities. This year marks the program’s 19th anniversary, highlighting a commitment to fostering academic growth, leadership skills, and a well-rounded educational experience aimed at preparing students for future challenges and opportunities.
Fostering Academic Excellence and Leadership
The SMSP is distinguished for uniting high-achieving students from esteemed federal institutions such as the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Zayed University (ZU), and the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT). During their year at NYUAD, students will participate in advanced academic courses, leadership workshops, and mentorship opportunities, gaining valuable insights from faculty and engaging with peer networks that stimulate intellectual discussions across various fields.
Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Co-chair of the Scholars Program Steering Committee, emphasized the program’s role in empowering students. She remarked, “The scholars program is a unique platform that encourages exceptional students across the UAE to pursue their aspirations while developing essential skills.” With such backing, students can look forward to transformative experiences that extend beyond academic hurdles.
An Immersive Learning Experience
The 2026-27 SMSP curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cover a diverse spectrum of subjects, including sustainability, technology, public policy, the humanities, and sciences. Scholars will not only absorb knowledge through traditional methods but will also engage in experiential learning contexts, allowing them to develop critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills. This multifaceted approach ensures that students can apply what they learn in real-world situations, further enriching their personal and professional development.
Fatma Abdulla, a prominent figure in the administration of the program, expressed excitement for the incoming class, noting, “These students have already demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential.” The program aims to provide an environment where students can challenge themselves and gain new insights, laying a solid foundation for their future academic endeavors and career paths.
Building Connections for the Future
Over the years, SMSP has proven its effectiveness by supporting 396 students, many of whom have progressed to further their education at prestigious institutions across the globe, including 69 individuals who have enrolled in NYU’s global campuses. Alumni have pursued a range of careers in academia, government, and other sectors, demonstrating the program’s significant contributions to the development of future leadership in the UAE.
Aysha Aljaberi, Assistant Vice Provost for the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Community Programs & PhD Pathways Program, highlighted the program’s adaptability, stating, “Its impact comes from combining rigorous academic learning with experiences that allow scholars to see leadership and global challenges from different perspectives.” Engaging with UAE leaders and building relationships within the NYUAD community enriches the students’ experiences, providing them with valuable lessons and lasting connections that will influence their future careers.
As the SMSP continues to evolve, it remains committed to its core mission of nurturing future leaders who are equipped to tackle both local and global challenges. Students will embark on an insightful journey where they can cultivate their talents, broaden their horizons, and prepare for impactful roles in society.
