Saudi Arabia has emerged victorious, clinching the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup (Khaleeji 27) title after beating the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in an exhilarating final. The match took place at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, where an impressive crowd of 62,827 fans witnessed the Green Falcons secure their fourth Gulf Cup championship. This win marks a milestone as it is the first time these two nations faced off in the final of this prestigious regional tournament.
Fast-Paced First Half
From the onset, Saudi Arabia set a vigorous pace, quickly establishing dominance on the field. The breakthrough came just 11 minutes into the match, when Hammam Al-Hammami’s strike from outside the penalty area deflected off an UAE defender, catching goalkeeper Khalid Eisa off-guard. Building on this momentum, Saudi Arabia extended their lead just three minutes later. Firas Al-Buraikan found himself unmarked during a swift counterattack and expertly slotted a left-footed shot into the net, putting the score at 2-0 before halftime. Their solid defense held firm throughout the second half, even as the UAE pressed for a comeback.
Despite having several opportunities, including a shot that struck the post and a penalty that was overturned following a VAR review, the UAE struggled to convert their chances. Saudi Arabia’s disciplined defensive display ensured that they retained their advantage, ultimately securing the victory.
Path to the Final
Saudi Arabia’s journey to the final was impressive. They topped Group A with a series of victories against Kuwait, Oman, and Iraq. In the semifinal, the Green Falcons faced Qatar and triumphed in a nail-biting penalty shootout after a goalless extra time, winning 3-2. The UAE also had a commendable run, leading Group B with wins over Yemen and Bahrain, along with a draw against Qatar. They reached the final by defeating Oman 1-0 in their semifinal clash.
This latest title marks Saudi Arabia’s fourth Gulf Cup win, placing them level with Iraq as the tournament’s second-most successful team, behind Kuwait, which has ten titles. For the UAE, this match marked a missed opportunity to claim a third championship, having previously won in 2007 and 2013.
Recognizing Sporting Excellence
Additionally, the Gulf Football Federation recently announced that the Player of the Tournament award will be named after Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, recognizing his substantial contributions to Gulf sports and the establishment of the Gulf Cup concept back in 1968. The award will not only honor exceptional talent but also include a housing unit from the tournament sponsor Diyar Al Arabia for the outstanding player, further enhancing the game’s prestige and importance in the region.
