The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, emphasized on Monday the robust strategic partnership that exists between the Gulf nations and France. This relationship is rooted in shared visions and interests, fostering collaboration on various fronts that contribute to regional and global security and stability.
Strengthening Gulf-France Relations
During a recent joint ministerial meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Albudaiwi articulated the need for continued efforts to enhance and broaden the scope of this partnership. The meeting, which was co-chaired by Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani, the Bahraini Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Jean-Noel Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, gathered GCC foreign ministers to discuss pressing regional issues.
Albudaiwi pointed out the sensitive geopolitical climate in the region, notably referencing the Iranian attacks on key installations and diplomatic sites in Gulf states since February 28. He stressed that these nations are not participants in the escalating conflicts yet are making concerted efforts to mediate and de-escalate tensions.
Security of Sea Routes
Highlighting the Gulf states’ commitment to ensuring maritime safety, Albudaiwi called for adherence to Security Council Resolution 2817 and for the restoration of navigation rights in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb as they were prior to late February. He firmly rejected any unilateral fees or conditions on passage rights, underscoring the necessity for international cooperation in maintaining safe waterways.
Albudaiwi also commended France for its stance against the attacks on Gulf countries and its active participation in international efforts to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. This shared commitment illustrates the depth of the partnership and its relevance in navigating current challenges.
A Focus on the Palestinian Cause
In discussing the geopolitical landscape, Albudaiwi reaffirmed the significance of the Palestinian cause. He stressed the urgent need for an end to the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as outlined in the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international resolutions.
The GCC and France’s collaboration extends beyond addressing immediate concerns; it seeks to build a united vision for a more secure, stable, and prosperous future.
