UAE Dominates Yemen in Arabian Gulf Cup Debut as Zlatko Dalic’s Tenure Begins with a Flourish

The UAE national football team kicked off its journey under the new management of Zlatko Dalic with a dominant 4-0 victory over Yemen in Jeddah, marking a significant start for the coach. The match demonstrated the team’s intent as they set their sights on clinching a third Gulf Cup title.

The UAE’s New Era Begins

This match was the first competitive outing for the UAE since their bronze medal finish at the Arab Cup in Doha last year. Due to weather conditions, their third-place playoff match against Saudi Arabia was suspended at halftime, which left fans eager to see how the team would regroup. The previous coach, Cosmin Olaroiu, stepped down after a long hiatus from match action to return to club football, paving the way for Dalic’s appointment.

Dalic took the reins after a successful run coaching Croatia, where he led the team in the World Cup. His experience and leadership had already been validated during a prior stint in the UAE with Al Ain, where he made a lasting impression. Now, his primary challenge is the Gulf Cup, a vital competition for both the UAE and the coach himself, especially with new talents like Yuri Cesar and Mamadou Coulibaly making their debuts in the starting lineup.

A Strong Start with New Faces

The UAE fielded a squad with significant changes; only five players from the interrupted match against Saudi Arabia made it into the starting eleven against Yemen. Given the extended gap between matches and the new dynamics within the team, it was natural for the players to take time before finding their rhythm. However, the energy from the UAE fans, albeit outnumbered by Yemen supporters, inspired the team to overcome their initial hesitance.

Early in the match, Yemen showed resilience despite falling behind in FIFA rankings. Their players pressured the UAE squad, attempting to gain the upper hand in the opening minutes. However, the UAE found its stride when the first goal finally arrived in the 25th minute. A brilliant exchange of passes between Cesar and Bruno de Oliveira culminated with Nicolas Gimenez scoring a stunning goal, striking the ball into the net off the crossbar.

Dominance and Control

As the first half progressed, the UAE doubled its lead ten minutes later due to an unfortunate own goal by Yemen defender Nader Sahal after a cross from Marcos Meloni. As Yemen struggled to cope, Luan Pereira notched the UAE’s third goal in stoppage time, further solidifying their control over the match.

The UAE maintained their momentum after halftime, continuing to dominate play. Once again, Meloni and Gimenez combined effectively, with Gimenez scoring a header to push the score to 4-0. With such a commanding lead, Dalic had the luxury of substituting players to preserve their fitness for future matches, knowing tougher challenges awaited.

The UAE team looks ahead now, facing Bahrain next, followed by a crucial group match against Qatar. This opening victory sets a promising tone as they strive for success in the Gulf Cup, showcasing coaching changes and the introduction of new talent, a hopeful sign for the future of UAE football.
