UAE schools enforce stricter regulations on hairstyles, cosmetics, and food choices.

Schools across the United Arab Emirates have updated their guidelines regarding student uniforms, personal appearance, and nutritional standards. As the new academic year commences, parents and students are alerted to stringent regulations concerning hairstyles, makeup, and the types of food students are allowed to bring for lunch. These changes aim to create a disciplined and focused educational environment.

Student Appearance Standards

At Gems Royal Dubai School, boys are expected to maintain a tidy hairstyle in a natural color, adhering to the school’s standards. Principal and CEO Jen Steel emphasizes that extreme or overly distinct hairstyles, such as the qaza style—which involves shaving parts of the head while leaving others long—are not acceptable. Such measures are put in place to ensure that students present themselves neatly, fostering a respectful atmosphere conducive to learning.

The American Academy for Girls has taken a proactive approach in communicating appearance standards. Utilizing videos and images, the school outlines acceptable uniform styles, hairstyles, and overall presentation. According to superintendent Lisa Johnson, students who do not comply with uniform regulations incur penalty points unless they can provide a valid excuse. Additionally, the school offers a reserve of uniforms for those facing clothing challenges.

The Role of Uniforms in School Culture

Michelle Thomas, principal and CEO of Gems Al Barsha National School, reinforces the belief that appearance contributes significantly to the school’s positive culture, particularly since the institution follows both Emirati and Islamic principles. Students and parents are informed about these requirements during assemblies, mentorship sessions, and daily routines. When a student’s hairstyle does not conform to guidelines, the school reaches out to both the individual and their family, promoting a collaborative solution rather than a punitive one. The institution views its uniform policy as a means to instill a sense of belonging, equality, and responsibility among students.

Lunch Nutrition Guidelines

In addition to appearance standards, schools are also emphasizing the nutritional aspects of students’ lunches. Parents are urged to pack healthy lunches, steering clear of caffeinated drinks and ultra-processed foods. The dietary guidelines set forth by schools must comply with the regulations established by Dubai Municipality and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.

In Abu Dhabi, similar guidelines are in effect, with restrictions placed on processed junk food, sugary beverages, and items such as deep-fried foods and processed meats. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) enforces these rules to cultivate healthy eating habits in students and to ensure that school cafeterias serve nutritious options that contribute to students’ well-being.

By enhancing regulations surrounding appearance and nutrition, UAE schools are actively striving to create a learning environment that upholds respect, discipline, and health. These initiatives are crucial for fostering an atmosphere where students can thrive both academically and socially. As these changes unfold, they reflect a broader commitment to educational excellence and the overall development of young learners in the region.
