VHP Leader Murder: NIA Detains Suspect Extradited from UAE

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently apprehended an individual linked to the targeted killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Vikas Prabhakar. This arrest has drawn attention due to its international dimensions, particularly involving the deportation of the accused from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The ongoing investigation underscores the challenges posed by cross-border terrorism and organized crime.

Arrest of Harwinder Kumar and His Role

Harwinder Kumar, also known as Sonu, was detained as he arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Following prolonged diplomatic efforts, the UAE deported him to India due to his suspected involvement in providing strategic support and funding to the terrorists responsible for Prabhakar’s murder. The NIA has indicated that Kumar played a pivotal role in facilitating logistics for the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), the banned terrorist organization accountable for the attack.

The events surrounding Prabhakar’s assassination unfolded on April 13, 2024, when he was shot by terrorists at his confectionery shop in Nangal, Roopnagar. Following this attack, the NIA formally registered a case on May 9, 2024, and has since filed three comprehensive chargesheets outlining the roles of several individuals involved in the conspiracy.

International Conspiracy and Funding Channels

Investigations by the NIA have implicated multiple operatives in a well-orchestrated conspiracy aiming to eliminate Vikas Prabhakar. Key figures identified include Harjit Singh, alias Laddi, and Kulbeer Singh, alias Sidhu, who operate from Germany. Kumar’s participation as a logistics provider in the UAE significantly aided these individuals in procuring weapons and transferring financial resources necessary for their operations.

The NIA’s chargesheet, submitted in October 2024, detailed the involvement of Pakistan-based BKI leader Wadhawa Singh and several other alleged terrorists. This document highlights the extensive network and coordination that facilitated Prabhakar’s assassination, emphasizing how criminal organizations can exploit international borders to execute their plans.

Details of the Arrests and Charges

In addition to Kumar, the NIA has apprehended two shooters involved in the attack: Mandeep Kumar, also known as Mangli, and Surinder Kumar, alias Rika, both hailing from Nawanshahr, Punjab. Alongside them, Gurpreet Ram, who also resides in Nawanshahr, faces various charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Arms Act.

The NIA’s investigation further reveals a complex web of actors, with absconders being identified as handlers for the arrested suspects. The organization alleges that Wadhawa Singh, currently based in Pakistan, coordinated with operatives in Germany to ensure the execution of the attack while facilitating the transfer of arms, ammunition, and funds from international networks.

Concluding Insights

This case sheds light on the intricacies of transnational terrorism and the essential role of international cooperation in combating such threats. The NIA’s ongoing efforts to unravel the various facets of this crime demonstrate the agency’s commitment to addressing organized terrorism, which poses significant risks to national security. With ongoing investigations and arrests, the NIA aims to dismantle these criminal networks and bring all those involved in Prabhakar’s assassination to justice.
