This individual had completed military training with Emirati forces at a UAE base and was en route to Sudan via Chad, where he would align himself with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. The RSF is notorious for committing severe human rights violations in its quest for power against Sudan’s military.
Covert Operations and Foreign Fighters
The contractor described the secretive nature of his arrival in the UAE, saying they were concealed “through the back of the airport.” His journey underscores a troubling pattern where hundreds of Colombian ex-fighters have reportedly been recruited by the Global Security Services Group (GSSG) to support the RSF. With direct ties to the UAE’s ruling elite, GSSG’s involvement highlights the intricate web of private military operations intertwined with state interests. Human Rights Watch’s recent findings indicate that these foreign recruits, alongside the RSF, are complicit in horrific acts that amount to war crimes.
The UAE is increasingly implicated in exacerbating a humanitarian crisis that has displaced millions. As per UN data, more than 14 million individuals have been forced from their homes, with 4.4 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Yet, the European Union remains hesitant to confront the UAE directly, opting instead for ambiguous statements that only reference “external actors” responsible for the ongoing conflict. The EU and its member states need to take definitive steps to investigate the GSSG and enact targeted sanctions against its leaders.
The EU cannot justify humanitarian aid without addressing the root of complicity in violence against civilians.
