The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran is seeing increasing hostilities at sea, particularly in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Both nations are engaging in a series of targeted attacks on oil tankers, threatening not only their economic interests but also the safety of marine environments in this critical area.
Recent Maritime Escalations
On September 8, the U.S. military struck five Iranian oil tankers, which prompted retaliatory strikes by Iran against Jordan’s Al-Azraq airbase. Just days earlier, on September 5, three additional Iranian tankers were targeted. This series of strikes followed Iran’s firing of ballistic missiles towards a U.S. naval aircraft carrier and destroyer near the Strait, according to reports from U.S. Central Command. In response, Iran claimed to have targeted three oil tankers in what it deemed “unauthorized routes” within the Strait, along with other vessels linked to U.S. operations.
The ongoing back-and-forth between the two nations has raised substantial concerns about the environmental impact in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is home to numerous tankers, many of which carry millions of barrels of crude oil. A successful strike could easily lead to catastrophic events such as fires, vessel sinkings, or major oil spills, deteriorating the health of the marine ecosystem.
Oil Tankers on Standby
As of September 7, data from MarineTraffic indicated that 42 tankers were waiting to traverse the Strait of Hormuz, with many more vessels experiencing delays in the broader Gulf of Oman region. Among these, 18 were confirmed to be transporting oil. Collectively, these tankers possess an estimated carrying capacity of 1.76 million cubic meters of oil, a vast resource that could be endangered with the continuation of maritime attacks.
This volume equates to approximately 11.1 million barrels of oil, which corresponds to around 11% of the world’s daily oil needs. To visualize this, it’s enough oil to fill around 714 Olympic-sized swimming pools. A large-scale incident could release substantial quantities of oil into the Gulf, threatening ecosystems, coastlines, and local fisheries.
Impact on Marine Life
The environmental ramifications of tanker strikes are already visible. Past conflicts, such as Operation Desert Storm, left indelible marks on marine environments due to oil well fires that led to extensive pollution along coastlines. Reports suggest that over 770 kilometers of coastline in the Gulf were adversely affected by oil spills, significantly damaging marine ecosystems.
Currently, ongoing hostilities put the fragile marine ecosystem of the Gulf at risk once again. Oil spills not only poison marine life but can have far-reaching impacts on local fisheries, altering species distribution and spawning patterns. Sensitive habitats like coral reefs and mangroves are particularly vulnerable, often retaining pollutants long after a spill occurs.
A study by the University of South Florida indicates that oil spill incidents in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz have increased significantly this year compared to the previous one. With ongoing maritime hostilities, the threats posed by oil spills to marine life and water quality are dire, necessitating urgent attention to prevent further environmental degradation.
