MoPH Wraps Up the 12th Qatari Patient Safety Week

Doha, Qatar recently witnessed the successful conclusion of the 12th Qatar Patient Safety Week, which took place from September 17 to 23. This year’s theme, “Safe Care for Non-communicable Diseases,” embodied the slogan “Safe Care for Life!” and set the stage for a comprehensive series of events aimed at improving healthcare safety and quality.

Collaborative Efforts in Healthcare

The week-long event drew a diverse group of participants, including government bodies, semi-governmental organizations, private healthcare institutions, academic establishments, and civil-society groups, along with patients and their families. The primary focus of the activities was to advocate for safe healthcare practices concerning non-communicable diseases. This journey included stages such as prevention, screening, early detection, treatment, and long-term follow-up care, underscoring the importance of a holistic approach to health.

Dr. Ameena Ibrahim Al Fakhroo, Acting Director of the Healthcare Quality Department at the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), emphasized the role of collaborative partnerships among participating entities in achieving the week’s success. Since 2014, the MoPH has worked diligently to foster a culture of safety and quality in healthcare, laying the groundwork for resilient and adaptive health systems throughout Qatar.

Engaging Community Activities and Events

One of the standout initiatives during Qatar Patient Safety Week involved illuminating 24 prominent landmarks in orange for World Patient Safety Day. This public awareness campaign was complemented by multilingual educational efforts focusing on prevention methods, prudent medication use, and risk reduction related to non-communicable diseases. Additionally, a health awareness event at the MoPH headquarters saw participation from over 200 individuals. The event featured vital services such as medication reconciling, clinical reviews, health assessments, and various awareness programs, ranging from nutrition to mental health and patient safety.

A specialized webinar titled “Enhancing Patient Safety and Quality of Care Across the Non-communicable Disease Care Journey” served as another pivotal component of the week. This gathering attracted approximately 1,442 professionals, shedding light on equitable and patient-centric care strategies. The discussions concluded with a set of strategic priorities aimed at advancing patient safety, covering areas like preventive care, diagnostic accuracy, medication safety, and innovations in healthcare delivery.

Global Collaborations and Future Strategies

In addition to local efforts, the week included an international online workshop held in collaboration with the BMJ Group and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), providing best practices for research improvement in healthcare. This initiative exemplified Qatar’s commitment to enhancing patient safety while adhering to high academic standards and practical applications.

Healthcare providers across Qatar also contributed by organizing various educational and awareness events, thereby reinforcing the overarching message of patient safety. The MoPH supported these initiatives by offering guidance and actively participating in numerous activities.

Overall, the Qatar Patient Safety Week is a testament to the ongoing commitment of the MoPH to champion patient safety and high-quality healthcare. Through collective efforts, Qatar aims to reduce preventable harm and ensure safe care for those living with non-communicable diseases, signifying a significant stride towards a healthier future.
