Turkey intensifies measures against independent media over ‘LGBT propaganda’ claims.

In recent days, Turkish authorities have intensified their efforts to suppress free speech by shutting down an independent news outlet and blocking numerous social media accounts. These actions have raised concerns among human rights advocates and media watchdog organizations regarding the state of freedom of expression in the country.

Closure of T24 and Allegations of LGBT Propaganda

A significant development occurred when a court in Istanbul ordered the shutdown of T24, a prominent independent news website. The closure is attributed to allegations of the website disseminating “LGBT propaganda.” This marks the second severe crackdown on the LGBT community in Turkey within a short span of time, reflecting the country’s increasingly restrictive stance on LGBTQ+ rights.

Prosecutors argued that T24 had published numerous articles—118 in the past year—that they deemed “propaganda,” although they did not provide a public list of these items. The media outlet responded firmly, asserting that it had not published any such propaganda and labeled the court’s ruling as “baseless” and a violation of laws pertaining to freedom of expression and broadcasting.

Targeting Pro-Israel Content on Social Media

In addition to the closure of T24, Turkish authorities are also targeting social media accounts. Reports indicate that at least 93 accounts on the platform X (formerly Twitter) were blocked under the pretext of spreading “pro-Israel propaganda.” Along with these, authorities took action against 147 other accounts that discussed Turkey’s economic challenges, which were labeled as disinformation.

The crackdown extends further, with allegations that accounts belonging to economists, traders, and financial analysts—totaling around 2.65 million followers—were restricted to protect national security and public order. EngelliWeb, an organization dedicated to monitoring internet freedom, has highlighted these developments, emphasizing the alarming trend of censorship.

International Reactions and Human Rights Concerns

This series of actions comes amid growing international criticism of Turkey’s human rights record. In the latest World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, Turkey ranked 163rd out of 180 countries, a decline from its previous position, indicating a disturbing trend in press freedom and expression.

The situation reflects a broader narrative in Turkey, where multiple rights groups have reported increasing repression against various communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ population. Activists and NGOs are calling for global intervention and support to uphold human rights and freedom of expression in Turkey.

In light of these troubling developments, observers are urging the international community to hold Turkey accountable for its actions. The implications of such censorship not only threaten individual rights and freedoms but also hinder the essence of democratic discourse essential for any society’s growth and development.
