Palestinian Advocate Calls for Pressure on Israel, Supports Two-State Talks

The pressing need to stabilize the Palestinian economy and reduce tensions in the West Bank has been underscored by Dr. Ahmad Shadid, leader of the Al-Finiq (The Phoenix) movement. Speaking with The Jerusalem Post, he emphasized that the incoming Israeli government must release withheld Palestinian tax revenues to prevent a potential crisis that could have regional ramifications.

Understanding the Unemployment Crisis

In his first media interaction since the formation of his electoral list, Shadid expressed a deep concern for the soaring unemployment rates among Palestinians. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, as of August, the unemployment rate in the West Bank stood at a staggering 27.9%. With nearly a third of the labor force compromised, Shadid views this as a dire situation that undermines families and communities. He highlighted that the inefficiency within Palestinian Authority institutions acts like “a cancer,” further exacerbating the challenges faced by workers and new graduates eager to secure jobs.

Strategies to Combat Unemployment

When addressing potential solutions, Shadid laid out two primary strategies. He advocated for the establishment of agricultural and industrial initiatives that could create jobs for tens of thousands, even amid the authority’s “limited resources.” He also pointed to the complicated issue of the Israeli occupation, which he claims directly inhibits economic growth by restricting access to jobs within Israel and impeding local industry and trade.

Shadid highlighted that over 250,000 workers are unable to access employment opportunities due to the ongoing occupation. He argued that until the Israeli government halts its oppressive measures, the Palestinian Authority will struggle to meet its obligations to its people effectively. This lack of action has devastating consequences, particularly as events surrounding the recent conflict have seen Israel revoke work permits for many Palestinians, exacerbating the already critical unemployment situation.

Calls for International Support and Pressure

Dr. Shadid’s views extend beyond immediate economic concerns; he passionately argued for the release of Palestinian tax revenues currently withheld by Israel, which he sees as a right of the Palestinian people. He claims that past actions to withhold funds violate international law and hinder the socioeconomic progress of Palestinians. In light of these challenges, he believes international pressure should be exerted on Israel to comply with global norms and pursue a viable two-state solution.

He reiterated that a pragmatic approach, grounded in realistic aspirations and available resources, is crucial for moving forward. Rather than relying on ineffective slogans, Shadid promises that his faction, the Phoenix Alliance, is committed to empowering the voices of the Palestinian people and addressing their real concerns.

We’re at a pivotal juncture in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, marked by extreme difficulties. The Phoenix Alliance aims to forge connections between the Palestinian leadership and the international community to advocate for peace and equality, ensuring that no one is left behind.
