Final group of German troops comes back from Iraq.

The recent return of the last group of Bundeswehr soldiers from Erbil, Iraq, marks a significant moment in Germany’s military history. After more than a decade of involvement, this development indicates a shift in the region’s security dynamics and the evolving role of international forces.

End of a Decade-Long Mission

In a formal ceremony held at Wunstorf Airbase near Hanover, Lieutenant General Günter Katz announced that the return of 28 soldiers symbolizes the conclusion of Germany’s military presence in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This mission began in 2015 and initially focused on combating the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group. Over the years, the German military has played a crucial role in stabilizing the area through various support and advisory efforts, particularly aimed at assisting the Peshmerga, the armed forces of the autonomous Kurdistan Region.

Shifting Security Landscape

Nils Hilmer, the state secretary at the Ministry of Defence, noted that recent months had been marked by increasing security tensions in the region. Since March, attacks have surged, not just across the territory but specifically targeting the airbase where many German forces were stationed. This deterioration in the security climate has prompted a reevaluation of operational commitments. Reflecting on these developments, Hilmer emphasized that the Iraqi government has chosen to regain full control over its national security, a decision that is met with respect from Germany.

Future Collaborations and Support

Despite the withdrawal of troops, Germany is not severing ties with Iraq. Instead, efforts are underway to establish a framework for future cooperation with the Iraqi armed forces. This includes maintaining relationships with the Peshmerga, as Germany aims to continue supporting the stabilization of the region through advisory roles rather than direct military involvement. The facilities in Erbil have already been dismantled, and responsibilities have been transferred to local security forces.

End of an Era for U.S. Forces

In a related development, the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq has been finalized. This marks the conclusion of an extensive period during which U.S. military operations sought to topple Saddam Hussein’s regime and combat the rise of the Islamic State. The simultaneous withdrawal of both German and U.S. forces signals a notable transition in the region, as Iraqi authorities aim to solidify their security framework independent of foreign intervention.

The repatriation of Bundeswehr soldiers underscores the evolving nature of military engagements and the necessity for regional self-sufficiency. While the end of this mission presents challenges for security in Iraq, it also opens the door for strategic partnerships aimed at fostering peace and stability in a historically volatile area.
