Egypt recently took a significant step in promoting mental health awareness by illuminating its mental health and addiction treatment facilities in green. This initiative was aligned with World Mental Health Day 2026, emphasizing the importance of mental health as an integral part of overall well-being.

Green Lighting Campaign for Awareness

The Ministry of Health’s green lighting campaign aims to educate the public about mental health as a vital aspect of living a fulfilling life. By focusing on the significance of early intervention and professional support, the campaign seeks to diminish the stigma often associated with mental health disorders. The initiative symbolizes hope and recovery, underlining the necessity for collaborative efforts in creating a safe, supportive environment. The aim is to respect patient dignity while ensuring their rights are protected.

As part of its overarching mission, the Ministry is actively enhancing services for both patients and their families. This involves addressing the mental health needs of healthcare professionals as well as service providers. The development of a robust support system is essential to fostering an environment where mental health concerns can be openly discussed and treated.

Introduction of Family Counseling Clinics

In line with its mental health initiatives, the Ministry announced the upcoming launch of family counseling clinics. Ayman Abbas, the head of the Central Administration for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, stated that the first phase of the Sanad clinics will soon commence operations at Al-Mamoura and Abbassia hospitals. These facilities will offer psychological support and guidance to family members of patients, helping them comprehend their loved ones’ conditions and cope with the associated challenges.

The clinics will not only provide counseling but also follow-up services and referrals to specialized care when necessary. Trained professionals will be available to ensure that families receive the appropriate interventions tailored to their needs, fostering a sense of community and support around mental health.

Focus on Burnout Prevention for Healthcare Workers

Additionally, the Sanad program will implement a burnout prevention component specifically aimed at healthcare workers and service providers. Recognizing the mental health challenges faced by those in the medical field, the program will utilize specialized assessment tools to evaluate burnout levels. By identifying key stressors, appropriate interventions will be established, including training on how to manage work-related stress effectively.

Under the first phase, designated days will be set aside for psychological support and family counseling, further emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to advancing mental health services. These efforts aim to bolster public awareness and education surrounding mental health issues, contributing to the development of an integrated, sustainable mental healthcare system.

By investing in both patient care and healthcare worker support, Egypt’s Ministry of Health endeavors to create a more holistic approach to mental health. This initiative not only promises to enhance the quality of life for individuals facing mental health challenges but also aims to foster a culture that values mental well-being across the public and professional spectrum.
