Iraq is making strides in its efforts to enhance its electricity supply through international collaborations. The Ministry of Electricity has disclosed that the country currently imports 600 megawatts of electricity daily from Turkey, with ambitious plans to boost this capacity significantly in the future.
Electricity Imports from Turkey
According to Ahmed Turki, the spokesperson for the Electricity Ministry, increasing electricity imports is a pivotal aspect of Iraq’s strategy to fortify its national grid. The Ministry is actively engaged in various interconnection projects, intending to enhance the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply in the region. The ongoing negotiations and agreements with neighboring countries like Turkey and other Gulf States reflect Iraq’s commitment to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependency on internal production.
As part of its strategy, Iraq has successfully integrated an additional capacity of 300 megawatts from Turkey into its national grid. This decision follows a request made during a recent visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. The current daily import from Turkey stands at 600 megawatts, but plans are underway to expand this to nearly 2,000 megawatts in the upcoming phase of the electrical interconnection project.
Interconnection with Gulf States and Jordan
In addition to its collaboration with Turkey, Iraq is also nearing completion of an electricity interconnection project with the Gulf States, reported to be about 98 percent finished. This project aims to provide a total capacity of 500 megawatts. The successful execution of this interconnection is anticipated to play a crucial role in stabilizing Iraq’s electricity supply, especially during peak demand periods.
Iraq’s energy collaboration extends beyond Turkey and the Gulf States; the country has also been importing electricity from Jordan. Currently, Iraq obtains 50 to 100 megawatts from Jordan, although the contract recently expired in mid-September. However, there are optimistic expectations for a renewal in the coming summer, which would further augment the electricity supply stability in the region.
Strategic Benefits of Electricity Interconnections
The implications of these interconnection projects go beyond just numbers; they are central to Iraq’s long-term energy strategy. By reinforcing ties with neighboring countries through electricity imports, the Ministry of Electricity aims to improve the overall efficiency and reliability of the national grid. This strategy not only helps to address the existing shortfalls in domestic energy production but also fosters regional energy cooperation and stability.
As Iraq continues to develop its electricity infrastructure, the successful implementation of these interconnection projects is expected to have a profound impact on economic development and public welfare. Enhanced electricity access serves as a cornerstone for various sectors, including industries and services, ultimately contributing to the nation’s overall growth and stability.
With these ongoing initiatives, Iraq is on a promising path to achieving a more robust and reliable electricity supply, setting the stage for future energy security and economic prosperity.
