Digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) are now essential components for driving both economic and societal growth. These technologies enhance service delivery, improve productivity, facilitate informed decision-making, and propel efforts towards sustainable development. Qatar has recognized this critical role and is making substantial strides to harness the potential of ICT and AI.

Qatar’s Commitment to Digital Advancement

During discussions at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee, Sheikh Khalid Abdulaziz Al-Thani, a member of Qatar’s delegation, emphasized the nation’s commitment to advancing information and communications technology. Al-Thani pointed out that these initiatives are aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Digital Agenda 2030, both of which aim to create a robust digital infrastructure. This framework focuses on promoting economic diversification and ensuring digital inclusion for all sectors of society.

Implementation of National AI Strategies

Qatar is actively executing its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, a comprehensive plan aimed at bolstering scientific research and enhancing national capabilities in AI. The strategy encompasses various sectors and is designed to establish partnerships that foster innovation. Key initiatives such as GOV AI and the TASMU Smart Qatar program are pivotal in this transformation process, significantly improving public service quality and accelerating digital advancements.

Investment in Digital Infrastructure

Significant investments in digital infrastructure have been a cornerstone of Qatar’s AI strategy, including the development of extensive fiber-optic networks, state-of-the-art data centers, and advanced cloud computing capabilities. These investments are essential for the expansion and application of AI technologies across multiple sectors. Notably, the announcement of Qai, the national AI company set to launch in December 2025, signals a commitment to invest in advanced AI systems and support digital solutions for both public and private entities.

Global Cooperation for Sustainable Development

Recognizing the importance of global digital transformation, Sheikh Khalid stressed the need for international collaboration. He highlighted that forging partnerships in technology transfer, capacity building, and digital infrastructure development is vital for narrowing the development gap among nations. Affordable and secure access to technology can significantly contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, a priority for Qatar and the international community.

Through its active engagement in the UN process on AI governance, including participation in the inaugural UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, Qatar is underscoring its commitment to working with global stakeholders. Sheikh Khalid reaffirmed that Qatar is dedicated to utilizing innovation and technology to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ensuring that progress is shared universally.

In summary, Qatar’s initiatives in digital transformation and artificial intelligence demonstrate a focused effort to integrate these technologies into societal and economic frameworks. By prioritizing infrastructure development and fostering international cooperation, Qatar is setting a precedent for other nations while striving for sustainable progress in the digital age.
