Israeli Officials Caution Against Expectations for Saudi Normalization Amid Trump’s Optimism

Israeli officials are voicing doubts about the likelihood of a normalization deal with Saudi Arabia, even as former US President Donald Trump recently indicated that the Kingdom might be closer to joining the Abraham Accords. Reports suggest that Israeli diplomats have not observed any significant movement from Riyadh towards formal relations with Israel.

Israeli Skepticism on Saudi Normalization

Sources within the Israeli government express a lack of evidence indicating that Saudi Arabia is ready to advance toward normalization. An Israeli source stated that “Riyadh is showing little appetite for advancing normalization,” reflecting a cautious approach among Israeli officials. This sentiment was echoed by a senior diplomat who warned against raising expectations of a swift diplomatic breakthrough, stating, “There is no evidence to substantiate that we are on the verge of a dramatic move.”

This skepticism stands in stark contrast to Trump’s recent comments, which suggested an optimistic outlook for Saudi-Israeli relations. While addressing reporters at the White House, Trump highlighted that Israeli support in Saudi Arabia’s fight against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels has potentially enhanced the chances for diplomatic engagement between the two nations. “Yeah, I do. I think they will. Israel has been very helpful to Saudi Arabia,” he remarked, implying ongoing cooperation despite the lack of official diplomatic ties.

Continued Efforts for Diplomatic Relations

Trump’s statements suggest that while formal relations are not yet established, the groundwork for cooperation exists. When asked if Saudi Arabia is reconsidering its participation in the Abraham Accords, Trump argued that the possibility remains more open than ever. He described the Abraham Accords as “one of our great achievements” and claimed that Saudi Arabia is pleased with both Israel’s and the US’s support.

Normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel has long been a key objective of American foreign policy, particularly since the Abraham Accords were introduced during Trump’s first term. Before the tragic terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the US had been actively working to facilitate a formal agreement between Jerusalem and Riyadh, which appeared to be making headway. However, following the attack, Saudi Arabia suspended the US-backed normalization initiative.

Linking Cooperation to Nuclear Agreement

Trump remains committed to the idea of integrating Saudi Arabia into the normalization framework. His approach includes proposing a US-Saudi nuclear cooperation agreement that would be contingent on Riyadh’s willingness to establish diplomatic ties with Israel. This linkage indicates a strategic attempt to intertwine security and diplomatic relations in a way that could benefit all parties involved.

While the future of Saudi-Israeli normalization remains uncertain, the dialogue continues. Both nations’ intricate relationship is emblematic of broader Middle Eastern dynamics, affected by regional conflicts and shifts in global diplomacy. As developments unfold, all eyes will be on whether the optimistic tones from some political figures can translate into actual progress on the ground. For now, the intricate negotiations continue amidst skepticism and cautious optimism from Israeli authorities.
