Gulf Nations Denounce Houthi Strikes on Saudi Arabia and Promise Solidarity

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has expressed strong condemnation of the persistent attacks launched by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia. In a recent statement, the GCC voiced its unwavering support for Saudi Arabia and highlighted that any aggression aimed at a member state jeopardizes the entire coalition.

Collective Defense Stance

The GCC, consisting of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, emphasized that an assault on any of its six members would be regarded as an attack against all. During a meeting of foreign ministers held in Manama, Bahrain, the organization reiterated its commitment to a joint defense agreement. The statement reinforced Saudi Arabia’s right to take necessary measures to ensure its national security and territorial integrity.

The condemnation comes on the heels of an announcement from the Saudi-led military coalition, which reported intercepting two drones near Riyadh and in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province early on a Sunday morning. Earlier that day, another drone was intercepted close to the Saudi capital. Although the coalition refrained from naming those responsible for these attacks, the pattern underscores ongoing regional tensions stemming from Houthi hostility.

Threats to Regional Security

Gulf foreign ministers specifically called out the Houthis for their lethal attacks that target civilian airports and crucial infrastructure. They issued a warning about the severe threat this group poses to regional stability. Additionally, the ministers urged for stricter enforcement of the United Nations arms embargo against the Houthis and encouraged international recognition of the movement as a terrorist organization.

This growing international concern has been echoed by the United Nations Security Council, which condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and threats to maritime shipping in the Red Sea in a statement issued on October 15. These developments not only underline the ongoing security challenges across the Arabian Peninsula, but also highlight the strategic imperative of securing vital shipping routes and civilian assets.

Yemen’s Government Resists Houthi Aggression

In a separate yet related appeal, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has formally requested action from the Security Council to address Houthi attacks affecting residential neighborhoods and state facilities. This appeal included references to a significant attack on the presidential palace in Aden, the temporary seat of the Yemeni government, which further illustrates the urgency of the situation.

This appeal places additional diplomatic pressure on the Houthis amidst escalating violence in Yemen and the broader region. The GCC’s recent statement not only affirms a united front for Saudi Arabia’s security but also highlights the pressing need for enhanced oversight regarding the arms embargo in order to mitigate the threat posed by the Houthis to Gulf nations and global shipping routes.

In summary, the GCC’s response signifies a concerted effort to strengthen regional security in the face of recurring aggression from the Houthi movement. The collective defense stance, coupled with calls for international measures, demonstrates the critical need for cooperative action to counteract threats that compromise both regional stability and international shipping integrity.
