Incidents Linked to Israel Constitute Most Antisemitic Acts in Austria

In the first half of 2026, a total of 671 incidents of antisemitism were reported in Austria, according to the Reporting Centre for Antisemitism by the Jewish Community of Vienna (IKG). This statistic reflects a minor decrease from the 726 incidents documented during the same timeframe in 2025 and significantly less than 808 incidents reported in the latter half of 2024. While the decline is indicative, the current numbers still exceed those from before the October 7 massacre, when only 311 cases were reported. On average, this equates to approximately 3.7 antisemitic incidents occurring each day during this period.

Antisemitism Driven by Global Events

The prevalence of antisemitic acts in Austria continues to be intricately linked with geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly how these events catalyze local hostility toward Jewish communities. Many reported incidents reflect a pattern where Jewish individuals are unjustly held accountable for actions attributed to the state of Israel, showcasing a troubling intersection between international conflicts and domestic antisemitic behavior.

A significant aspect of the reported incidents stems from elements related to Israel. Approximately 75.4% of registered antisemitic cases were related to Israel, often entwined with other prejudiced themes such as Holocaust relativization and conspiracy theories. The president of IKG, Oskar Deutsch, noted a disturbing trend since the onset of conflict on October 7, 2023, whereby incendiary rhetoric has escalated into direct threats and physical assaults against Jewish individuals.

Analysis of Incident Trends

The surge of antisemitic incidents has been especially pronounced following the outbreak of war on February 28, leading to a notable spike in cases. In the two weeks following the onset of hostilities, 79 incidents were reported, nearly double the 40 cases documented in the two weeks prior. March emerged as the peak month within the six-month reporting period, with a total of 152 reported antisemitic actions.

The report identifies that although lower-level offenses, such as property damage and public disturbances, have seen a reduction, stark increases have been noted in violent behavior. Physical assaults increased from 5 to 12 compared to the first half of 2025, matching rates observed in early 2024. Many of these assaults are often attributed to specific ideologies, with a significant number categorized as Muslim-motivated.

Ideological Sources of Antisemitism

The ideological underpinnings of antisemitic incidents reveal a complex landscape, where numerous cases are traced back to various ideological backgrounds. Of the total incidents, 191 were classified as Muslim-motivated, 162 as left-wing, and 147 as right-wing, with a significant portion remaining unattributable.

Social media emerged as a major platform for these incidents, accounting for 376 cases. Notably, 33 incidents were linked to public demonstrations, while 14 occurred within educational settings. Calls for or glorification of terrorism formed a considerable segment of the reports, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of antisemitism as influenced by different ideologies, including left-wing and Muslim perspectives.

IKG leadership emphasizes the necessity of increased vigilance and reporting mechanisms to effectively convey the true extent of antisemitism within Austria. The hesitance of affected individuals to report incidents, fueled by fears of becoming targets themselves, only exacerbates the issue. It is crucial for communities and individuals alike to actively combat antisemitism to foster a safer, more inclusive environment for all.
