Steve Ludwig Appointed Grand Marshal for Little Egypt Festival Parade; Theme Revealed

The Little Egypt Festival Parade Committee has named Steve Ludwig, the owner of Salem Bowl, as the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade taking place on Saturday, October 3rd. This exciting announcement was made during a surprise visit by General and Parade Chair Jay Henke to the bowling alley.

Salem Bowl’s Esteemed Owner Recognized

Steve Ludwig expressed his gratitude by saying, “It’s an honor for sure. It’s great to be recognized. I’ve always wanted to work with the community, and it’s going to be fun to be part of the parade.” The committee chose Ludwig unanimously, with Henke relaying that the decision was simple. “I brought a few names to the committee, and the minute I mentioned Steve, everybody said, ‘that’s the guy.’ Our entire committee was on board with Steve being the Grand Marshal,” he explained.

Ludwig’s significant contributions to the local community and his unwavering support for school bowling programs have made him a beloved figure in Salem. Henke emphasized that Ludwig’s business has been a staple in the area for years. “Salem Bowl has been a constant in Salem for as long as I remember, and continues to carry on the tradition,” he noted.

The Theme of the Parade

Alongside the announcement of Ludwig’s role, the parade committee also unveiled this year’s theme: “Strike up the Fun.” Committee member Missy Hogan explained the significance of the theme. “We left that open,” Hogan said. “It correlates with Steve Ludwig and what he does here at the bowling alley, but it also leaves it open for anybody to have any type of float or any type of activity associated with the parade, so just having fun and spreading the fun around.” This inclusive theme invites participants to creatively express themselves while celebrating community spirit.

Fostering Youth Bowling Talent

Ludwig’s commitment to bowling goes beyond business; he is also the coach of the Salem Wildcat Bowling Team, which has achieved remarkable success, winning three state titles alongside multiple podium finishes. His influence extends to other high school bowling teams in the area, including Centralia High and Christ Our Rock High School, as well as various junior high schools like Franklin Park, Selmaville, Iuka, and Raccoon Junior High. Notably, Sandoval Junior High will join the lineup this year.

Beyond coaching competitive teams, Ludwig is passionate about introducing the sport to younger children. “We offer the facility to anyone who wants to get interested in bowling,” he said. The bowling alley hosts a “Kids Bowl Free” program during the summer, allowing children to bowl at no cost. Ludwig and his team bring these kids into their structured programs, helping them develop their skills and fostering a love for the game.

A Community Pillar

Ludwig reflects on his journey with fondness, describing his work at Salem Bowl as a “labor of love.” He understands that building relationships within the community is what keeps people coming back for support. “I’ve got the kids’ kids now, so I’m on the third generation of them, and it’s been fun,” he shared, illustrating the deep-rooted connections that have flourished over nearly four decades.

As the Little Egypt Festival approaches, the excitement surrounding Ludwig’s role as Grand Marshal is palpable. His dedication to bowling, youth development, and community engagement makes him a standout figure in Salem, and his story will be a highlight of the upcoming parade.
