African Union calls for calm amid rising tensions between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Eritrea

The African Union has called for restraint among Ethiopia, Egypt, and Eritrea amid escalating diplomatic tensions between these nations. Recent actions have raised concerns regarding the potential for increased instability in the region.

Calls for Peaceful Dialogue

The African Union Commission has been closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the need for the involved countries to refrain from any actions or statements that could exacerbate existing tensions. The Commission highlighted the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and encouraged the nations to resolve their differences through established diplomatic methods and peaceful negotiations. They expressed readiness to assist in de-escalation efforts, aiming to facilitate constructive dialogue and peaceful resolutions.

As tensions flared, Egypt and Ethiopia engaged in reciprocal diplomatic expulsions, further straining their already fragile relations. Egypt recently declared a counselor from the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo persona non grata, giving the diplomat 48 hours to leave as a reciprocal measure following Ethiopia’s earlier expulsion of an Egyptian diplomat. This tit-for-tat exchange illustrates the heightening diplomatic rift between the two nations.

Underlying Issues in Ethiopian-Egyptian Relations

The ongoing tension is rooted in deeper issues, notably their disagreements over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. An official source from Egypt branded Ethiopia’s recent actions as “regrettable and unjustified.” They further denied any allegations of meddling in Ethiopia’s internal matters, asserting that Egypt adheres to the principles of international law and the U.N. Charter. This source also accused Ethiopia of deflecting blame onto external parties for its internal issues, a sentiment echoed by diplomatic sources in Cairo.

Ethiopia, on the other hand, maintains that its diplomatic actions are essential for its national interests. With the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry confirming the expulsion of the Egyptian diplomat, the situation threatens to spiral further if mutual respect and understanding are not prioritized.

Eritrea and Ethiopia’s Deteriorating Relations

In a separate but related development, Eritrea announced the severance of diplomatic ties with Ethiopia. This decision came in response to Ethiopia’s closure of the Eritrean Embassy and the expulsion of ten Eritrean diplomats, including the chargé d’affaires. Eritrea’s Foreign Ministry condemned Ethiopia’s actions as hostile and indicated that they would respond accordingly by severing diplomatic relations. Eritrea has refuted Ethiopia’s claims of hostile acts, further complicating the already contentious relationship between the two nations.

The African Union has reiterated the necessity for all three countries to preserve diplomatic avenues as it stands ready to assist in dissipating tensions and fostering peaceful resolutions. With regional stability at stake, it is crucial for Ethiopia, Egypt, and Eritrea to prioritize dialogue and negotiation over aggressive tactics and unilateral decisions.

The current landscape underscores the importance of diplomacy in a region that has faced protracted conflicts and historical mistrust. As these nations navigate their complex relationships, the African Union’s involvement may prove pivotal in charting a path toward peace and cooperation.
