Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, recently convened with high-ranking officials from BP to evaluate the company’s ambitious plans for exploration, drilling, and production within the nation. This meeting highlights BP’s commitment to investing $700 million in a strategic program aimed at drilling four significant wells in Egypt.

Key Participants and Discussions

The meeting featured prominent figures from BP, including Gordon Birrell, the Executive Vice President for Exploration and Production; Nader Zaki, the Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa; and Wail Shaheen, the Chairman of BP Egypt. During this gathering, BP representatives outlined their drilling initiatives that commenced in April, emphasizing their focus on four confirmed wells. Notably, they also discussed the recent start-up of the Fayoum-4 well, which has successfully integrated into Egypt’s national natural gas infrastructure, contributing approximately 80 million cubic feet per day—an achievement realized two years earlier than anticipated.

Drilling Program and Future Wells

Following the successful operation of the Fayoum-4 well, the rig has progressed to the next drilling site to undertake exploratory work on the Grab well. This operation will be followed by drilling two consecutive deepwater exploratory wells for Arkus, a joint venture in which BP has a controlling interest of 51%, while XRG retains 49%. These initiatives not only align with BP’s strategic goals but also underscore the company’s commitment to advancing Egypt’s energy landscape.

Government Support and Investment Plans

During the discussions, Minister Badawi reiterated the government’s unwavering support for ongoing exploration and production activities within BP’s concession areas. This collaborative effort aims to enhance Egypt’s overall oil and gas output, which is crucial for the country’s energy strategy. The meeting also addressed BP’s broader global priorities and future business strategies, demonstrating a strong alignment between the government and BP’s objectives in the energy sector.

Recent Achievements in Gas Supply

BP’s recent drilling activities follow the successful initiation of the Fayoum-4 well in the West Nile Delta in August, a project that has significantly boosted domestic gas supplies by adding around 80 million cubic feet per day. The efficient integration of the well into existing processing facilities and the Giza-Fayoum pipeline eliminated the necessity for new subsea infrastructure, representing a strategic advancement in operational efficiency.

BP discovered the Fayoum-4 well during its 2025 exploration campaign and expedited its development process, ensuring that its benefits could be realized ahead of schedule. Looking ahead to fiscal year 2026/27, BP has earmarked $1.5 billion specifically for gas exploration and development in Egypt, reflecting its long-term commitment to the region’s energy landscape.

In summary, the strong partnership between the Egyptian government and BP is poised to drive significant advancements in the nation’s oil and gas sector, bolstering energy production and reinforcing Egypt’s position as a key player in the regional energy market.
