Egypt and Malaysia Strengthen Their Bilateral Relations to a Strategic Partnership

Egypt and Malaysia have officially strengthened their diplomatic ties by entering into a strategic partnership, a momentous event that emphasizes their collective dedication to enhancing collaboration in diverse political, economic, security, and development areas.

Historic Visit by President El-Sisi

The partnership was proclaimed following a state visit from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on October 9 and 10, 2026, invited by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia. During his visit, President El-Sisi was honored with an official welcoming ceremony and had the opportunity to meet the King at Istana Negara, Malaysia’s National Palace. This visit laid the groundwork for a renewed commitment to their relationship, acknowledging decades of diplomatic engagement that dates back to November 10, 1959.

Strengthening Bilateral Discussions

On October 10, President El-Sisi held productive discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Their dialogues were centered on bolstering bilateral cooperation and addressing mutual priorities. Topics included political collaboration, trade growth, defense and security initiatives, digital advancements, energy policies, healthcare improvements, educational opportunities, and tourism expansion. Both leaders expressed a strong willingness to fortify existing ties, translating their new strategic partnership into actionable results.

The countries also identified priority sectors for enhanced economic collaboration, such as agriculture, halal industries, vocational education, semiconductor development, manufacturing, infrastructure projects, and renewable energy sources. Their commitment to promoting business-led ventures was clear, alongside plans for the Second Meeting of the Joint Commission and further Bilateral Consultations.

Commitment to Regional and Global Cooperation

Both nations underscored the importance of advancing regional and global cooperation through established forums such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Developing Eight (D-8). Malaysia voiced aspirations to join BRICS, highlighting its dedication to interacting with emerging markets and fortifying international economic ties. President El-Sisi and Prime Minister Anwar also discussed the pressing issues affecting the Gulf and West Asia, prioritizing peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in these crucial maritime regions.

One of the pivotal points of their dialogue was their joint support for a fair resolution to the Palestinian conflict, promoting the two-state solution, with East Jerusalem recognized as the capital of an independent Palestinian state. Both leaders echoed the urgent need to ensure humanitarian access to Gaza and condemned any actions leading to the displacement of Palestinian communities. They expressed profound concern regarding the escalating violence and the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Focus on Regional Stability

The leaders’ discussions also touched on Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, reinforcing their support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 while urging the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territories. Furthermore, attention was drawn to promoting peace in the Horn of Africa and Sudan, while respecting the sovereignty of coastal states in the Red Sea. They highlighted the significance of peaceful resolutions to disputes within the Nile Basin, emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions that benefit all parties involved.

Both Egypt and Malaysia’s new strategic partnership marks a significant evolution in their long-standing relationship, establishing a framework for sustained collaboration and mutual support in various critical sectors, and creating pathways to address shared regional and global challenges.
