President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has emphasized the importance of advancing Egypt-India relations, particularly focusing on boosting bilateral trade to $12 billion. This call for action came during a recent discussion with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Strengthening Bilateral Trade Relations

Current data shows that trade between Egypt and India reached approximately $6.5 billion for the fiscal year 2025-2026. Both leaders have expressed optimism about achieving the ambitious target of $12 billion in trade within five years, a hopeful prospect that may significantly enhance economic ties. The Indian Embassy in Egypt underlines the scope of trade between the two nations, listing key exports such as petroleum products, engineering goods, textiles, and pharmaceuticals from India. Conversely, Egypt exports petroleum, various chemicals, and agricultural products to India.

During their meeting, Modi and El-Sisi explored opportunities for strengthening their countries’ strategic partnership, which was elevated in 2023. El-Sisi urged for increased Indian investment in Egypt, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, clean energy, technology, and automotive. He highlighted Egypt’s competitive edge as an investment hub, citing its strategic geographical position, skilled workforce, and robust free trade agreements. These elements make Egypt an attractive destination for Indian companies seeking to establish or expand their presence in the region.

Investment Opportunities in Egypt

El-Sisi pointed out the various incentives available to investors, particularly those in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and other industrial areas, aimed at enhancing economic collaboration. Such initiatives can facilitate more Indian firms investing in sectors that are poised for growth, including renewable energy and automation. The Egyptian leader aims to cultivate a favorable environment for business, conducive to joint ventures that can leverage each country’s strengths.

Prime Minister Modi echoed El-Sisi’s aspirations by reaffirming India’s dedication to deepening bilateral relations and fostering economic collaboration. He acknowledged Egypt’s strategic influence in the region and its vast economic potential. Modi further urged Indian corporations to actively consider investment opportunities in Egypt, emphasizing the need for both nations’ business sectors to collaborate more effectively. Engaging the entrepreneurial ecosystems of both countries can lead to accelerated joint projects and technology transfer, thus bolstering economic resilience.

Collaboration in Emerging Sectors

In addition to trade, the leaders placed emphasis on cooperation in emerging sectors such as new energy technologies, pharmaceuticals, and information technology. These sectors present exciting opportunities for the private sectors in both nations to innovate and grow, reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development.

On the geopolitical front, they also addressed pressing international issues, including the Palestinian conflict. El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s stance on resolving regional conflicts through diplomacy and negotiation while respecting national sovereignty and international law. He praised India’s effective leadership during its BRICS presidency, highlighting its efforts to enhance cooperation among member states and advocate for the interests of the Global South.

Through these discussions, El-Sisi and Modi aim not only to bolster Egypt-India relations but to set a strong foundation for future cooperation that can significantly impact both nations and the wider region.
