A recent interview with a U.S. Air Force colonel shed light on his harrowing experience of survival and rescue after his aircraft was shot down in Iran. The colonel, referred to by his mission call sign “Bravo,” detailed the frightening moments following the incident during a segment on CBS’s 60 Minutes.
The Crash Experience: A Fight for Survival
In April, Colonel Bravo’s aircraft was struck, sending him into a rapid descent at speeds ranging from 70 to 100 mph. He described the moment of impact as akin to “being hit by a freight train.” The suspense heightened when Bravo realized his parachute was damaged by the missile. Reflecting on the terror of that moment, he revealed, “At one point when I looked up and saw no parachute, that was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen.” In the face of his fear, Bravo prayed for guidance and assistance, signaling his determination to survive the ordeal.
Upon ejection from the aircraft, Bravo and his fellow pilot, known as “Alpha,” faced different fates. While Alpha successfully ejected and landed safely, Bravo encountered a rough landing about five miles from the crash site, which was located near Isfahan, Iran. Despite sustained injuries—including a broken back, shoulder, and arm—he had to move quickly, knowing the urgency of his situation.

Describing his resolve, Bravo commented, “I had injuries, but we all train to adapt and overcome the things that we’re faced with.” Remarkably, he hiked a challenging 7,000-foot ridgeline despite his injuries. Alpha was located approximately six hours after the aircraft was downed. During the rescue efforts, Bravo was able to inform the rescue team of his injuries while still demonstrating his capability to move. The commitment to rescuing him was palpable, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stating that the goal was to have him retrieved within 24 hours. However, complications arose with the rescue planes’ landing gear, causing delays.
