Australian engineer Robert Pether shares his experience after being released from a Baghdad prison.

Australian engineer Robert Pether has recently expressed profound gratitude to his family for their unyielding support in his fight for freedom. After enduring a harrowing ordeal lasting over five years, largely spent in a Baghdad prison, he has finally returned to Ireland.

### Long Fight for Freedom

Mr. Pether was released from a Baghdad jail on Monday, a significant milestone following an arrest that took place in 2021. He was apprehended alongside an Egyptian coworker and subsequently convicted on allegations his family asserts were false fraud charges tied to his role as a contractor for the construction of the Central Bank of Iraq headquarters. In addition to a lengthy prison term, he was slapped with a staggering fine of $16 million.

While Mr. Pether was freed from imprisonment in June of the previous year, he faced restrictions that barred him from leaving Iraq until this week. Upon his arrival in Dublin, he was emotionally overwhelmed while addressing the media, reflecting on the challenging journey his family endured alongside him. He acknowledged that his wife and children experienced emotional turmoil during his absence.

### The Heart of the Family Struggle

“They lived this nightmare with me every single day,” Mr. Pether stated, visibly emotional. He recognized the toll that his absence had on his children, who experienced fear and uncertainty during their formative years. He expressed deep appreciation for his wife Desree, crediting her for holding the family together while constantly advocating for his release. “Our children lost years with their dad,” he lamented, reaffirming Desree’s crucial role amid the distressing circumstances.

Mr. Pether mentioned that while he understood the media would inquire about his ordeal, his immediate focus was on his family and the sacrifices they had made. He emphasized a desire to discuss the support that carried them through such a difficult time rather than delving into the intricate details of his situation and legal battles.

### Claims of Innocence and Injustice

Desree Pether emerged as a relentless advocate, voicing concerns over her husband’s physical and mental health during his imprisonment. She highlighted significant procedural flaws in his prosecution, including the assertion that he was coerced into signing a confession in Arabic without comprehension. The United Nations had even investigated and concluded that both Mr. Pether and his Egyptian colleague, Khalid Zaghloul, had endured mistreatment that bordered on torture.

In Dublin, Robert expressed a clear resolve, stating, “I don’t want to focus on courts or governments today.” He highlighted the ongoing injustice surrounding his conviction, remarking that merely returning home did not equate to correcting the wrongs they faced. “We were innocent when we were taken on April 7, 2021, and we remain innocent today,” he declared.

### Gratitude for Unwavering Support

Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, welcomed Mr. Pether’s freedom, acknowledging the toll the situation had inflicted on him and his family. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, recognized the importance of the Iraqi government’s responsiveness to international calls for Mr. Pether’s release.

Desree had expressed frustrations with the Australian government, feeling that there was a lack of urgency in their efforts for Robert’s freedom. Despite the complexities of Mr. Pether’s situation, she sought assistance from the Irish government, even though Robert does not share the same citizenship.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Pether highlighted the importance of individual actions, asserting that sometimes a single person’s determination can profoundly change another’s life. “Saying thank you feels utterly inadequate,” he concluded, recognizing the countless individuals who went above and beyond to support him and his family during their ordeal.
